これは、日本最西端の地に生きる野生の馬を撮影した作品である。 沖縄本土から 650km、台湾から110kmに位置する沖縄県与那国島。 本作品の与那国島は地形学上、長い歴史の中で様々な文化が入り交じる地域であった。 日本在来馬種の一つに数えられる馬たちは、様々な渡来の足音を耳にしながら、生き永らえた。 そして、現代まで、その少数の命を守り繋いできた。 動乱の時代を乗り越え、連綿と続く、したたかな生の営みと、 この島に生息する野生の馬たちを捉えることから、「共存」の在り方を問いかける。

These are photographs of wild horses living in the westernmost point of Japan. The area, the Yonaguni island of Okinawa, is located 650 kilometers away from the main island of Okinawa, and 110 kilometers away from Taiwan. Over a long period of history, the geography helped bridge people and culture across the sea. The wild horse is one of the few native species that still has continued to the present day. These horses must have heard the people’s footsteps, making their way to Yonaguni over the ocean. This work shows the meaning of coexistence through the horses surviving as the species on this island despite years of unrest.
