Gerhard Richter as Teacher – an Interview with Etsuko Watanabe

Needless to say, Gerhard Richter is a big name in contemporary art. But did you know that his great popularity also extends to #Japan ?

A special exhibition is currently being held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT, #東京国立近代美術館 ) in honour of Gerhard Richter with the title “90th Anniversary of His Birth – 60 Years of Creation”.

Mind you, that it is not a post-mortem retrospective.
The highlight of the exhibition is the monumental series “Birkenau” painted by the artist back in 2014 at the age of 82 (!).

My interpreter-friend gave an interesting interview on it at the museum.
Let me do a bit of advertising for her here:

(Sorry, it is only available in Japanese)

Ms. Watanabe studied under Gerhard Richter at the Staatliche #Kunstakademie (State Art School, Düsseldorf) in the 1980s and is one of his “Meisterschüler”. The interview reveals intriguing inside stories about many former students who now belong to the jet-set of the art world.

(Dear Etsuko-san, sorry for having called you an interpreter. Interpreting was just a side job for you, of course.)

So if you are looking for a cool experience on a scorching hot summer day in Tokyo, why not dive into Richter’s world of “Schein und Sein” (Appearance and Being /仮象実象) at the MOMAT?

The exhibition runs until 2 October 2022.
