     They vie in the speed
     Of saying “papu . . . ” Losers are
     All swallowed by Papu

！私はびっくりマークにはさまれた！　？はてなマークに変身したぞ？ 
     !I’ve got hemmed in by
     Exclamation marks! ?They’ve changed
     Into question marks?

電柱の根元に並び用意ドンでのぼり始めるカタツムリたち　　　　　　　　　　
     From the bottom of
     A utility pole, snails start
     Climbing, with “Ready! Go!”

完成したジグソーパズルはピースたちがむにゅむにゅ押しくら万じゅうしている 
     The pieces of
     A completed jigsaw puzzle
     Are playing shove and push

手のひらが棲んでいる池　石の上でときどき身体をあたためている　　　　　　
     The palms of human hands
     Inhabit the pond. Sometimes they
     Bask in the sun on rocks

鉢植えの手のひらたちは陽に当ててときどき水をあげないと枯れる　　　　　　
     Potted palms of human
     Hands must be sunned and watered, or
     They will wither and die

顔たちがひしめき合ってだんだんとどの顔も正六角形に　　　　　　　　　　　
     Pressing each other,
     All the faces have got
     Hexagonal

死んだあと星ではなくて数千億星が集まる銀河になりたい　　　　　　　　　　
     After death, I’d like to
     Become, not a star in the sky,
     But a galaxy

年に一度電柱たちが天辺に思い思いの花を咲かせる　　　　　　　　　　　　　
     Utility poles
     Bloom at the top once a year
     Their favourite flowers

飲むと猫になれるコーヒーを出す猫カフェ　約一時間猫でいられる　　　　　　
     In “Cat Café” they serve
     Coffee which makes one a cat
     For about an hour

子供服売り場のマネキン　十年後は大人の服の売り場のマネキン 
     Dummies for children’s clothes 
     Will become in ten years or so
     Dummies for adult’s clothes

しばらくの間だけだが私は空全体を鏡にできる　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
     I can change the whole sky
     Into a mirror, though
     Only for a while

ミルクしか飲んでいないのに赤ちゃんは固形のうんこをするんだよなあ　　　　
     Though babies feed only
     On liquid milk, somehow
     Solid feces come out

指が手からぽろっと取れて蛙になりしばらく遊んでいることがある　　　　　　
     Sometimes, coming off
     From the palm, fingers become
     Frogs and play for a while

動物に人工知能を埋め込んで働かせるのは倫理的に可か？　　　　　　　　　　
     Is it ethical
     To make AI-implanted
     Animals work for us?

そこに見えてくるのではなくどこからか漂ってきて虹が架かった　　　　　　　
     Not fading in,
     But floating from somewhere,
     The rainbow stands there

もう虹が架からなくなった　条件がそろっても虹は架からなくなった　　　　　
     Rainbows never appear
     Nowadays, even when all
     Are so conditioned

ひまわりは機嫌がいいとS字形に曲がっては伸びる、曲がっては伸びる　　　　
     When in good humour,
     Sunflowers get S-shaped and
     Straighten, repeatedly

跳ねながらビーチボールを誰も彼も頭の上ではずませている　　　　　　　　　
     All the people are
     Leaping, to keep a beach ball
     Bouncing on their heads

河原じゅうの小石がそろって青白く光っては消える、光っては消える　　　　　
     Over the riverbed,
     Pebbles shine phosphorescent and
     Cease, repeatedly

その人がつま先で立ってくるくると回ると空で三日月も回る　　　　　　　　　
     When the man pirouettes,
     The crescent pirouettes
     At the same time

厨房へ案内される料理店　注文もなしにいきなり調理　　　　　　　　　　　　
     At the restaurant,
     They cook customers outright
     Without taking orders

私の臀部は二個のキャベツになりぼとんぼとんと地面に落ちた　　　　　　　　
     Becoming two
     Cabbages, my buttocks
     Fell on the ground

「ホタルのバカ、バーカ、バーカ」と言ってたらホタルが真っ赤に光り始めた　　 
     As I was saying,
     “Silly, silly fireflies,”
     They began to glow red

「銀河のバカ、バーカ、バーカ」と言ってたら銀河が真っ赤に光り始めた　　　　
     As I was saying,
     “A silly, silly galaxy,”
     It began to glow red

フォークたちが枝分かれした先端をバタ足のように動かしている　　　　　　　
     The forks are moving
     Their prongs as if they were
     Doing flutter kicks

その虹は光が淡く日が暮れるとやっと見えてきて明け方に消える　　　　　　　
     The rainbow is so pale
     That it gets visible at dusk
     And disappears at dawn

ナメクジに砂糖をかけたら巨大化した　あわてて塩をかけ小さくした　　　　　
     When I sprinkled a slug
     With sugar, it got gigantic,
     So I sprinkled salt

上機嫌な果物たちがハミングをしている　香りを振りまきながら　　　　　　　
     Good-humouredly,
     The fruits are humming, giving
     Off a fragrance

句読点の丸やぱやぴの丸たちがふくらんできてパンパン割れる＊＊＊＊　　　　
     Swelling, dots of
     Periods and on i’s and j’s
     Explode, with pops * * * * *

キャベツたちはきっと思ってる「けっ、人間。白菜みてーな顔しやがって」　　     Cabbages must be
     Thinking, “Ugh, humans! They all look
     Like Chinese cabbages”

蝶たちが関東じゅうから集まって東京タワーにびっしり留まる　　　　　　　　
     Gathering from all
     The Kanto region, butterflies
     Cover Tokyo Tower*

     *The Kanto region is Tokyo and six prefectures.

一ひらずつ雪だるまから雪がはがれ真上の空へ上昇していく　　　　　　　　　
     Flake by flake, coming
     Off the snowman, snow ascends
     Toward the sky

物真似のうまい蛙がミンミンゼミ、猫の声など次々真似る　　　　　　　　　　
     The frog, a master
     Mimicker, imitates voices
     Of cicadas, cats . . .

私が回したコマがいつまでも回っているので怖くなってくる　　　　　　　　　
     I am getting scared,
     As the top I set spinning
     Does not stop spinning

誰も彼も花びらのような目をしている　見つめられると怖くなってくる　　　　
     I am getting scared,
     As everyone stares at me
     With their petal-like eyes

後ろから声をかけられ振り向くと誰もいなかった　いや蟻がいた　　　　　　　
     Addressed from behind,
     I turned back, but found no one . . .
     An ant was on the ground

飛び回る紙飛行機を捕らえようと虫取り網を振り回している　　　　　　　　　
     Swinging an insect net,
     I try to catch the paper plane,
     Which keeps eluding

ガス星に引っ越しました　地面がなくガスに浮かんで暮らしています　　　　　
     I’ve moved to a gas
     Giant. It being groundless,
     I live floating on gas

白い息を吐く蛙たちに囲まれた　だんだん意識が遠のいていく　　　　　　　　
     Surrounded by frogs
     Which exhale white breaths, I drift
     Into unconsciousness

十本のピンをめがけてストーンを投げて滑らせるカーボーリング　　　　　　　
     Tenpin curl-bowling:
     Throwing, you set a stone sliding
     Toward ten pins on ice

ひまわりやバス停たちが走って行くひまわりバス停マラソン大会　　　　　　　
     There they go, running,
     Sunflowers and bus stops,
     In their marathon race

鍬のような形の頭の人々が頭で畑を耕している　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
     The people have hoe-shaped
     Heads, and always use their heads
     In hoeing their fields

何者かが土足禁止の湖を靴を脱がずに歩き回った　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
     With his or her shoes on,
     Someone has roamed on the lake, though
     There is a sign, “No Shoes!”
