人間は一人もおらずおびただしい猿だけ乗せて漂流する船
     A ship is adrift,
     With countless monkeys on board, but
     Without any humans
 
冬の木の葉のない枝から星のように光る滴がしたたり続けた 
     From the leafless branches
     Of winter trees, shining, starry
     Droplets kept dripping
 
雪だるまの口が開いて鳩時計のようにポポーと鳩が出てきた 
     The snowman’s mouth opened,
     And a dove popped out, saying
     “Poppo,” like a clock*
 
     *Somehow, “a cuckoo clock” is called “hato-dokei (a dove clock)” in Japan.

広がったり縮んだりする窓がある生き物のような丸い建物 
     Creature-like round
     Buildings with windows that
     Expand and contract
 
かみ合っていない二つの歯車がかみ合っているかのように回る 
     Though they are not meshing,
     The two gears turn as if they are
     Meshing with each other
 
雪だるまの頭の上に座布団を敷いて座っている招き猫 
     A beckoning cat
     Sitting on a square cushion
     On a snowman’s head
 
バスの群れを地表に放ち人間が乗ったり降りたりするのを眺める 
     Releasing a herd of
     Buses, I watch humans
     Getting on and off them
 
ゆっくりと最後部から先頭へチェシャ猫のように消えていったバス 
     A bus disappeared
     Slowly from the rear forward
     Like a Cheshire cat
 
たまに町へキリンの群れがやってきて何もしないでただ通り過ぎる 
     Sometimes a herd of
     Giraffes come into town and just
     Pass by, doing nothing.
 
私をじっと見ながら顔かたちを私と全く同じにする人 
     Staring at me, he makes
     His facial features exactly
     The same as mine.
 
何かよほどうれしいことがあったのか猫が一匹スキップしていく 
     A cat goes skipping,
     As if something has made it
     Very happy
