新しく日本に来た留学生さんへ／日本語を勉強しましょう　To New International Students in Japan: Let’s Study Japanese !

September marks a time when many international students graduate, and many new international students arrive in Japan.

Today, I’d like to share my advice for those who have just come to Japan as new students:
It is "Study Japanese from the first day !"

There are many other tips / advice I could give, but my biggest piece of advice is to learn Japanese.

I previously interviewed about ten current and former international students, and my last question was to ask them what advice they would give to their juniors.
Every single one of them answered, “Study Japanese.”
One former student mentioned that while living and studying in Japan can present various challenges, most of these difficulties can be resolved by speaking Japanese.

International students are highly capable and intelligent.
Many of them speak three or four languages or more.
So, if you study seriously, you can definitely become fluent in Japanese in a short time.

The biggest challenge is kanji.
In Japan, elementary school students learn about 1,000 kanji, and another 1,000 in middle school.
This means that to understand everyday written Japanese, you need to know around 2,000 kanji.

If you start studying kanji little by little every day from the moment you arrive in Japan, you’ll be able to learn 2,000 kanji during your two or four years of study.
However, trying to learn 2,000 kanji in the last few months of your stay is impossible.

Why study Japanese?
Here are some reasons:
- Daily life becomes more comfortable.
- It becomes easier to understand Japanese culture.
- You can make more Japanese friends.
- It becomes easier to find part-time jobs.
- It’s essential for job hunting.
Many people I’ve met came to Japan without any intention of working here, but later changed their minds and wanted to find a job in Japan.
However, if you only start learning Japanese then, there’s not enough time.

9月はたくさんの留学生さんが卒業し、たくさんの留学生さんが入学します。

今日は新しく日本に留学生としてやってきた人たちへの私のアドバイスを書きます。
それは、日本語を勉強しましょうということです。　
他にもいろいろなアドバイスはあります。　
でも、最大のアドバイスは日本語の勉強です。

私は以前10人くらいの留学生や元留学生の人たちにインタビューしました。
最後の質問で後輩へのアドバイスを聞きました。　全員が「日本語を勉強すること」と答えました。
日本で研究したり、生活する時にいろいろな困難があります。　でも、ほとんどの困難・問題は日本語を話せれば解決できます。と言った元留学生もいました。

留学生のみなさんはすごく優秀で頭がいいです。　
留学生の人たちは3つも4つも言語を話せる人も多いです。
そのため、まじめに勉強すればきっと短期間で話せるようになります。
大きな壁は漢字だと思います。
日本では小学校で1000個くらい、中学校でさらに1000個くらいの漢字を学びます。
つまり、日常で接する日本語の文章、文書を理解するためには2000個くらいの漢字を覚える必要があるということです。
日本に来た日から毎日少しずつ漢字を勉強すれば留学の2年間、4年間で2000個の漢字を覚えることは難しくはありません。
でも、留学が終わる最後の数ヶ月で2000個の漢字を覚えることは不可能です。

日本語ができるようになると、
・日常生活が快適になります。
・日本文化の理解もしやすくなります。
・日本人の友だちが増えます。
・アルバイトも見つけやすくなります。
・就職に必要です。
　日本に来た頃は日本で就職する気はなかったけれど、途中で日本で就職したいという考えに変わったという人にもたくさん会いました。　それから日本語を勉強しようとすると時間が足りません。
