2-1. What is VPS? - VPSとは?
VPS is an acronym for “Visual Positioning System”. A VPS is a technology used to position content in Augmented Reality (AR), also known as “localizing”.
A VPS positions content by recognising the real-world environment and therefore does not require any additional tools such as QR codes or image markers.
To recognise the environment the VPS requires the area to be mapped, creating a virtual version of the environment. This is achieved in different ways by different VPS systems, some use 3D scanners, some use 360-degree video, some use methods similar to photogrammetry, and some use satellite imagery.
The VPS technology will take this data and create a “map” of the environment which is used to recognise the environment and position the AR content.
Different VPS systems also have different sizes of VPS maps which determines the size of the environment over which the VPS will position content. For example, some VPS systems can cover areas as large as 6000m² while others are limited to a few meters squared.
The benefit of using a VPS for users is that it improves the User Experience (UX) of AR by making it more user friendly. AR content can be positioned simply by pointing a device’s camera at an environment and AR content can be positioned from a wider range of positions and angles.
2-2. What can be achieved with VPS - VPSで実現できること
The main function of a VPS system is to position AR content.
As the VPS maps are based on real world locations the AR content can be more seamlessly integrated into the real world environment. We can fit the AR content to the shape of an environment, we can place AR content on real world objects within the environment, have AR content interact with the environment, or be hidden by buildings.
For example, if the VPS map is based on a building we could make AR objects bounce off the surfaces, if the VPS map is based on a living room we could place AR content on the table, if the VPS map was based on a theater we could wrap the stage in AR content.
We can even make VPS maps from whole areas of a city and transform them with AR.
In addition to placing AR content, VPS systems can be used for navigation. When a device localizes to a VPS map we can calculate where the user is in relation to the real world. Therefore, If we know the position of a location relative to the VPS map, we can provide the user with accurate directions to that location.
VPS can also be used to create persistent content. Most VPS systems give each VPS map a unique ID which can be used as a reference for data stored online. This means that VPS maps can be used to store user generated content at specific locations.
VPS maps can also be used to synchronize real world dynamic data (such as human tracking data) with AR content. For example, if we know the location of a tracked person we can display data at their position, for example tracking members of sports teams, entertainers on stage, etc.

Visual Positioning Systems are the most important technological advancement in Augmented Reality. They allow developers to precisely position AR content onto the real world and allow users to access that content by simply pointing their device. VPS’ expand the usefulness of AR and greatly improve the user experience by reducing the friction of accessing the content.
In this way VPS technology will hopefully allow AR to transition from being a gimmick, toy or curiosity to something that can be actually useful in everyday life and engaging for longer periods of time.
