【Research Report】Study on Disaster Relief Donations: 2023 Edition

Summary

  • More than half, at 51.5%, have experience with disaster relief donations. About one in four people contribute to disaster relief through donations to municipalities via hometown tax payments.

  • Approximately 80% of those with experience in disaster relief donations have donated multiple times.

  • The year with the highest number of donations made is 2011, the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Following that, there was an increase in the number of donations in the years of major disasters such as the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake.

  • [Reasons for Making Disaster Relief Donations] About 40% of those who made disaster relief donations did so even for disasters not directly affecting them. Approximately 15% were motivated by their previous experience with hometown tax payments.

  • [Reasons for Disaster Relief Donations by Donation Method] Among those who made disaster relief donations through hometown tax payments, about 70% donated to regions they had a connection to.

  • Among those with experience in disaster relief donations through hometown tax payments, 12% have done so, and 32.5% are interested in trying it in the future.

  • The most common reason for making disaster relief donations through hometown tax payments was "because I can support without going to the disaster-stricken area" (32.3%), followed by "because I can choose the municipality I want to support" (25.8%).

  • About 90% of people are interested in knowing about the recovery status of the municipalities they donated to through hometown tax payments.
