Takramでは現在、WFH（Work From Home）をメインに働いています。Takramメンバーがどのように自身の働き方や暮らしをデザインしているのかをのぞいてみましょう。

At Takram, we are currently primarily working from remote. In this series, we take a look at how Takram's members are designing their life and work style.

Tatsuya Narita
多摩美術大学情報デザイン学科卒業。2014年よりTakramに参加。エレクトロニクスやデジタルファブリケーション技術を用いてハードウェアの開発、プロトタイピングを行う。主な展示に、2010年 東京都現代美術館: 「サイバーアーツジャパン－アルスエレクトロニカの30年」展 、21_21 DESIGN SIGHT「動きのカガク」展など。主な受賞歴にアルスエレクトロニカ賞2009 – [the next idea] honorary mentionsなど。

Tatsuya graduated from the Department of Information Design, Tama Art University, and joined Takram in 2014. He is specialised in hardware development and prototyping using electronics and digital fabrication technology. His personal works were previously exhibited at "Cyber Arts Japan: Ars Electronica - 30 years for Art and Media Technology" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and "Motion Science" at the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. He has also received the Ars Electronica Award 2009 - [the next idea] honorary mentions.

How do you design your working style?

リモートワークに移行し始めた当初は、僕自身がハードウェアのものづくりのプロジェクトに多く携わっていることもありほとんどコロナ前と変わらないくらいオフィスに通勤していました。最近はどんな職種であっても働き方の可能性は広げられると思っていて、意識的にオフィスに通う頻度を週2回程度に下げる試みをしています。元々持っていた3Dプリンタを活用したり、新たに定盤を購入し、自宅でものづくりができる環境を整えはじめました。

When we first transitioned to working remotely, I was commuting to the office just like I had before the pandemic since I was involved in many hands-on hardware prototyping projects. Recently, I’ve rethought this and have come to believe that one can transform their working style whatever their role or work is, and I’ve been trying to reduce my commute to twice a week since. As a first step, I’ve started re-using my 3D printer and purchased a new surface plate to improve my working environment.

実際に通勤しなくなったことで、ポジティブな変化とネガティブ変化の両方を実感しています。例えば、僕は通勤時間を読書に当てていたので、その時間がなくなったり、何気ない会話やそこから生まれるアイディアなど、セレンディピティが減ってしまうんだなということが分かりました。一方で、元々夜より朝の方が仕事が捗るタイプなのですが、通勤時間の分早く仕事をスタートすることで、夜は大好きなものづくりの時間にあてることができるようになったりしました。最近は3Dプリンタを活用した陶器の花瓶づくりをしているのですが、プライベートでのものづくりの時間や経験が充実することで本業にフィードバックされることも多いと感じています。

Less commuting had an impact in both positive and negative ways. For example, I used to read during my commute, but that was gone. If I were in the office, I would have casual chats with my colleagues, but that was gone too - which made me notice the decrease in serendipitous moments. On the other hand, I'm a morning type person, and by starting work earlier, I've managed to spend my evenings making things, my dearest leisure. Recently, I’ve been making vases with my 3D printer, and the more I commit to making things in my private life, the more it feeds back to my job at Takram.

What is your particular workspace?

これもプロトタイプで様々なことにチャレンジしています。社内のメンバーには何度か共有していますが、車で仕事ができるようにしたいなと思っていて目下準備中です。「今日は海に行って波を見ながら仕事をしたいな」とか、「今日は山に行って緑を見ながら仕事してみよう」みたいなことを実現したいなと思っています。

I am prototyping and testing various things at the moment. One example is: I’ve wanted to work from my car, and it’s currently work-in-progress. Somedays, I might work from the beach and hear the waves; other days, I might work from the mountain and see the green.

僕は自然が好きで、休みの日にはキャンプなどに以前から出かけていましたが、働き方が進行形で変化しつづける中で、きっと”オフィスor自宅”だけではなくて、今後働く場所の選択の幅がでてくると思うんです。そうすると時間の使い方も含めて仕事と遊びの境界線がより曖昧になってくるからこそ、グラデーションのかかった時代でのベストな働き方を、自分自身でトライしながら探していきたいですね。

I like nature and have been camping even before the pandemic, but as our working styles change, I think we will have more options other than just "office or home” - blurring the boundary between work and play. I want to explore the best way to work in such an era of gradient working spaces and styles.

What is a book you would recommend?

Takramでは、メンバーの学びを全面的にバックアップするために「Book Purchase」という制度があり、自由に書籍を購入することができます。他のメンバーがどんな本を買っているのかをSlackチャンネルで全員が見ることができ、その時の興味関心を垣間見ることができます。
At Takram, we have a "Book Purchase" system to fully support the learning of our members, allowing them to freely purchase books. All members can see what books other members are buying on our Slack channel and get a glimpse of their interests at the time.

ものづくりのReferenceに関する本が多いですね。最近は、「芸術の中動態」や「曲線の事典」を読みました。ものすごくマニアックなんですがものづくりのディテールについて詳しく書かれているので辞典系の本はよく参考にしています。

I often read books that are related to making. Recently, I read "The Middle Voice of Art" and "Curves : properties, history and constructions". They both touch upon niche topics, but I often read these dictionary-like books to deepen my understanding of the details of making and manufacturing.

What do you like about Takram？

他ジャンルの人をナチュラルにリスペクトできるところが好きかな。会社という組織になった瞬間に、当たり前のように比較され、お互いにマウントを取るみたいなことが起きやすいけど、Takramにはそれがないんですよね。あまり意識したことはないけど、多分Takramにいる人のベースの共通点として「探究心がすごく高い」というのが深く関係していると思います。Takramには本当に様々な分野のスペシャリストが集まっていて、多様がゆえに本当の深いところや細かいところまでは理解しきらない、でもだからこそ知りたいという気持ちがリスペクトにつながっているのかなと感じています。

I like how everyone naturally respects people from other genres. In companies, I think it’s quite common to have people compare and compete against each other, but that's not the case at Takram. I never gave it much thought, but it's probably related to the fact that the people at Takram are curious beings. We’re composed of specialists from truly various fields and backgrounds, and because of that diversity, we don't always understand each other in-depth and in detail. But that obscurity makes us even more curious, thus crystallizes to respect.

What interests you now？

今に始まったことではないけれど、ものづくりですね。コロナ以降で時間が増えたり、逆に人とのコミュニケーションが減ったことをきっかけに、環境やツールを自分に最適化することが重要だと感じるようになってきたので最近は道具を作ることに興味があります。花を飾るための道具である花瓶もそうだし、キャンプで使うナイフなども作っています。

I've always liked making things, and that hasn’t changed. After the pandemic, as I’ve had more time on my hands and less time to communicate with others, I’ve felt the importance of optimising the environment and tools for myself, so I am recently interested in making tools. Making vases, a tool for decorating flowers, is one example, and I’m also making knives for camping.

なんか、もうワクワクが止まらない！成田さんのお話を聞いていると自然とそんな感想が出てきますね。Takram内でも「車でのワーキングスタイル」は注目しているメンバーが多いのですが、完成が楽しみです。成田さん、取材対応ありがとうございました！

元々、Takram Lifeは「Takramさんって外から見えないのでどんな社風なのか不安」「優秀でクールなイメージ」というお声を頂くことが多く、Takramにどんなメンバーがいるのか知っていただくきっかけを作りたくて始めた連載なのですが、彼の取材から彼自身のすばらしい思考や人間性はもちろんですが、Takramらしさも垣間見えたように思います。

車で働けるようにしてみよう！というちょっと思いつかないような柔軟な発想や細部へのこだわり、世の中の流れや個人の体験からインプットされたものが昇華されて、アウトプットとして出てくる、Takramで働いてみて本当にこういうタイプの方が多いなと感じています。
