＃13　明日香村キトラ古墳壁画現在公開中です

現在明日香村キトラ古墳で国宝の壁画が公開されています。第26回公開は2月19日日曜日まで行われています。たくさんの方が来られていました。
壁画が国宝に指定されているのは、キトラ古墳と同じく明日香村にあります高松塚古墳の壁画「飛鳥美人」。高松塚古墳の壁画のほうが歴史の教科書に登場するのでおなじみかもしれませんね。古墳が見つかったのは高松塚のほうが先ですが、高松塚古墳よりも前にキトラ古墳が作られましたということです。
そして国宝級の壁画があるのに、お墓が誰のお墓なのかはわかっていません。多くのお宝が出土しているので、身分の高い方であったことは確かなのですが、一体誰のお墓なのか、謎は深まるばかりです。

I visited Kitora Tumulus today. Kitora Tumulus mural paintings are now open to the public by February 19th.
Kitora Tumulus Mural Paintings were designated as the national treasures as well as Takamatsu Tumulus Mural Paintings.
We do not know whose tombs they are even though these paintings and beautiful artifacts have been excavated.
Kitora is thought to have been erected in the late 7th or early 8th century before Takamatsuzuka. They must be erected for members of the imperial family or nobles who had great political power in ancient Japan.

明日香村は7世紀頃日本の首都で、現在の東京のような日本の政治の中心地がこの小さな村にありました。

Asuka village is located in central part of Nara prefecture.
Asuka was the imperial capital aound the 7th century and was the center of Japanese politics in this small village as in Today’s Tokyo.

キトラ古墳のお墓には四神、十二支、天文図の壁画があります。四神は天の四方を司る神獣で、四周の壁面に対応する方位に合わせて描かれています。四神は青龍、朱雀、白虎、玄武で色も対応しています。四神の成り立ちは中国の天文学がきっかけです。また中国の哲学「五行思想」の方角に当てはめられている色と結びつきました。
四神に下には獣頭人身の十二支が描かれています。天井には東に金箔で太陽、西に銀箔で月が表されています。そして円形の中国式の天文図が描かれています。本格的な中国式星図としては、現存する世界最古のものです。

The burial chamber of Kitora has paintings of the four divine animals, the 12 signs of the Chinese Zodiac,　and a celestial map. The four gods are Azure Dragon, Vermillion Bird, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise. They rule the four directions of heaven and are painted on the corresponding walls of the chamber. Four gods are based on Chinese astronomy and their color is connected to Chinese philosophy.
Below the gods are painted the 12 animal-headed figures of the Chinese Zodiac. They are thought to console the spirits of the dead or protect from evils.
The ceiling was painted with a gold-leaf sun on the eastern face and a silver-leaf moon on the western. On the same ceiling, a circular star atlas in the Chinese style were also painted. It is the world’s oldest existing example of a true Chinese-style star atlas.

1000年以上も前の壁画ですから、とても壊れやすくもろいものです。これを現代の技術で解明するのには多くの労力と時間がかかっています。発見から狭い石室での調査の様子を施設に展示されています。壁面の取り外しに使われた道具も展示されています。
6年4ヶ月もの歳月をかけ、壁画を取り外したということです。何度も練習した後取り外されたとのことですが、専門家の高い技術と調査に対する専門家のみなさんの情熱を感じました。

These paintings were so old, so they were so fragile. It takes a lot of work and time to solve their mystery. They have used today’s special techniques and special tools which was used to remove mural paintings are exhibited in the Kitora Tumulus Exhibition Hall. The removal process took roughly six years and four months. I was surprised to see how high techniques has been used and what an enthusiastic work they were.
