the rabbit sends in a little bill（うさぎは小さなビルを送りこむ①）

It was the White Rabbit, trotting slowly back again, and looking anxiously about as it went, as if it had lost something; and she heard it muttering to itself, “The Duchess! The Duchess! Oh my dear paws! Oh my fur and whiskers! She’ll get me executed, as sure as ferrets are ferrets! Where can I have dropped them, I wonder?”

やってきたのはあの白いうさぎだった。小走りでゆっくり戻りながら、うさぎは落ち着かない様子で何かを探していた。アリスはうさぎの独り言を聞いた。「公爵夫人！公爵夫人！おぉ私の前足ちゃん！おぉ毛皮とおひげちゃん！彼女に死刑にされてしまう。フェレットがフェレットであるのと同じくらい確実にやられてしまう！アレはどこに落としたんだろう？」

Alice guessed in a moment that it was looking for the fan and the pair of white kid-gloves, and she very good-naturedly began hunting about for them, but they were nowhere to be seen—everything seemed to have changed since her swim in the pool; and the great hall, with the glass table and the little door, had vanished completely.

その瞬間、扇子と白い子ヤギ革の手袋のことを言っていると思ったので、アリスはとても親切にそれらを探し始めた。しかし、それらはどこにも見あたらなく――アリスが涙の池で泳いだ時から全てが変わってしまったようだった。あの大きな広間、ガラスのテーブル、小さなドア、全てすっかり消えてしまった。

Very soon the Rabbit noticed Alice, as she went hunting about, and called out to her, in an angry tone, “Why, Mary Ann, what are you doing out here? Quick, now!” And Alice was so much frightened that she ran off at once in the direction it pointed to, without trying to explain the mistake it had made.

すぐにうさぎはアリスに気がついた。探し続けている彼女にうさぎは怒鳴った。「なんだメアリー・アン、ここで何をしているんだ？今すぐ走って家に帰るんだ。そしたら手袋と扇子を取ってくるように！今、すぐ！」アリスはとても驚き、うさぎに人違いだと説明もせず、すぐに指さされた方向に走って行った。

“He took me for his housemaid,” she said to herself as she ran. “How surprised he’ll be when he finds out who I am! RABBIT” engraved upon it. She went in without knocking, and hurried upstairs, in great fear lest she should meet the real Mary Ann, and be turned out of the house before she had found the fan and gloves.

But I've got to watch this mouse-hole till Dinah comes back, and see that the mouse doesn’t get out.’ Only I don’t think,” Alice went on, “that they’d let Dinah stop in the house if it began ordering people about like that!”

「なんておかしいのかしら」アリスは独り言をいった。「うさぎのお使いに行くなんてね。次はダイナにお使いを頼まれるんじゃないかしら！」そして色んな起こりそうなことを想像し始めた。「『アリスお嬢様！真っすぐこちらへ来て散歩の仕度をなさってちょうだい！』『すぐ行くわ、乳母さん！でもダイナが戻ってくるまでネズミが出てこないように巣を見張ってないと』」アリスは続けた。「でも、もしダイナがそんなふうに命令するようになったら、みんなは家から追い出してしまうと思うけどね！」

By this time she had found her way into a tidy little room with a table in the window, and on it (as she had hoped) a fan and two or three pairs of tiny white kid-gloves: she took up the fan and a pair of the gloves, and was just going to leave the room, when her eye fell upon a little bottle that stood near the looking-glass.

そんな感じで綺麗な小さな部屋へとたどり着いた。窓際のテーブルには（願った通り）扇子と子ヤギ革の小さな白手袋が2、3セット置いてあり、アリスはそれらを取って部屋から出ようとしたが、鏡のそばにある小さなビンが目に留まった。

There was no label this time with the words “DRINK ME,” but nevertheless she uncorked it and put it to her lips. “I know something interesting is sure to happen,” she said to herself, “whenever I eat or drink anything: so I’ll just see what this bottle does. I do hope it’ll make me grow large again, for really I’m quite tired of being such a tiny little thing!”

今回は「私を食べて」とは書かれていなかったが、それにも関わらずコルクを抜いて口へ運んだ。「何か面白いことが絶対起こるはずよ」とアリス。「私が食べたり飲んだりするときはいつだってそうなのよ。今回はどうなるかしら？また大きくなりたいわ、もうこんなに小さくなっているのに飽きちゃったのよ！」

It did so indeed, and much sooner than she had expected: before she had drunk half the bottle, she found her head pressing against the ceiling, and had to stoop to save her neck from being broken.

それは思ってたよりすぐに本当に起こってしまった。半分も飲まないうちにアリスの頭は天井を押し上げ、首が折れないようにかがむ必要があった。

She hastily put down the bottle, saying to herself “That’s quite enough—I hope I shan't grow any more—As it is, I can't get out at the door—I do wish I hadn't drunk quite so much!”

アリスはあわててビンを置いて言った。「もう十分よ・・・これ以上大きくならないことを願うわ・・・。ドアから出られなくなってしまったじゃないの・・・あんなに飲まなきゃよかったわ！」

Alas! It was too late to wish that! She went on growing, and growing, and very soon had to kneel down on the floor: in another minute there was not even room for this, and she tried the effect of lying down with one elbow against the door, and the other arm curled round her head. Still she went on growing, and, as a last resource, she put one arm out of the window, and one foot up the chimney, and said to herself “Now I can do no more, whatever happens. What will become of me?”

ああ！そう願うには遅すぎた！アリスは、大きく、大きくなり続け、すぐに床の上に跪かないとといけないほど巨大になり、これ以上大きくなるスペースはなくなってしまった。横になったり、片腕を頭の上に丸めたり、もう片方の肘でドアを抑えたりと試したが、まだ大きくなり続けた。最後の手段として、片腕を窓の外に出し、片足は煙突につっこんだ。そしてアリスは言った。「もう何が起こってもどうにもならないわ。これからどうなってしまうのかしら？」

Luckily for Alice, the little magic bottle had now had its full effect, and she grew no larger: still it was very uncomfortable, and, as there seemed to be no sort of chance of her ever getting out of the room again, no wonder she felt unhappy.

運が良いことに小さな魔法のビンの効果はここまでのようで、これ以上大きくはならなかった。しかし、ずっと心地は悪く部屋から出ることが出来なくなったので嬉しくはなかった。

I do wonder what can have happened to me! When I used to read fairy-tales, I fancied that kind of thing never happened, and now here I am in the middle of one! There ought to be a book written about me, that there ought! And when I grow up, I’ll write one—but I’m grown up now,” she added in a sorrowful tone: “at least there’s no room to grow up any more here.”

「何が起こってるのかしら！前におとぎ話を読んだ時はそんなこと絶対起こらないと思ったけど、今ここで私はその中心にいるわ！私の物語を本に書くべきね、絶対！私が大きくなったら書こうと思うわ・・・だけど、今まさに大きくなってるわね」アリスは投げやりな声で付け加えた。「少なくとも、これ以上大きくなるスペースはなくなったわ。」

“But then,” thought Alice, “shall I never get any older than I am now? That’ll be a comfort, one way—never to be an old woman—but then—always to have lessons to learn! Oh, I shouldn't like that!”

「だけど」アリスは考えた。「こんなに大きくなったってことは、これから年はとらないってことかしら？それはある意味嬉しいわね・・・私は決しておばあさんにならないのよ。・・・でも、そしたらずっとお勉強しなきゃならないじゃない！あぁそんなの嫌よ！」

“Oh, you foolish Alice!” she answered herself. “How can you learn lessons in here? Why, there’s hardly room for you, and no room at all for any lesson-books!”

「あぁ、アリスってばバカなんだから！」アリスは自問自答した。「どうやってここで勉強するっていうのよ？そうよ、この部屋はあなたでいっぱいで教科書なんか入らないわ！」

And so she went on, taking first one side and then the other, and making quite a conversation of it altogether; but after a few minutes she heard a voice outside, and stopped to listen.

そうやって、まずは片方に話しそれからもう片方へと、一人で会話をずっと続けていた。しばらくすると外側から声が聞こえてきたので、アリスは話すのをやめて耳をすました。

“Mary Ann! Mary Ann!” said the voice. “Fetch me my gloves this moment!” Then came a little pattering of feet on the stairs. Alice knew it was the Rabbit coming to look for her, and she trembled till she shook the house, quite forgetting that she was now about a thousand times as large as the Rabbit, and had no reason to be afraid of it.

「メアリー・アン！メアリー・アン！」声は言った。「私の手袋を早く持ってこい！」そしてパタパタ階段を上ってくる小さな足音が聞こえてきた。アリスを探しにうさぎがこちらへ来たのだ。アリスは恐怖で震え、家までガタガタと揺れた。アリスはうさぎより何千倍も大きくなっていることをすっかり忘れていた。恐れる理由などないのだ。

Presently the Rabbit came up to the door, and tried to open it; but, as the door opened inwards, and Alice’s elbow was pressed hard against it, that attempt proved a failure. Alice heard it say to itself “Then I’ll go round and get in at the window.”

うさぎはドアまで来て開けようとしてきた。内開きのドアだったのでアリスが肘で押さえつけ対抗して、その試みは失敗に終わった。うさぎが独り言をいうのが聞こえてきた。「それならまわりこんで、窓から中に入ってやるからな」

「そうはさせないわ！」と待ち構えた。うさぎがちょうど窓の下に来た音が聞こえたところで、いきなり手を開いて宙をつかんだ。

She did not get hold of anything, but she heard a little shriek and a fall, and a crash of broken glass, from which she concluded that it was just possible it had fallen into a cucumber-frame, or something of the sort.

何もつかめなかったが、キャーッと小さな金切り声と何かが倒れた音、そしてガラスが割れた音が聞こえてきたので、キュウリの温室に落ちてしまったか、似たようなところに落ちてしまったかのどちらかだろうと思った。

次にうさぎの怒った声が聞こえてきた。「パット！パット！どこにいるんだ？」すると、聞いたことない声がした。
「へいへい、ここです！りんごを掘ってますぜ旦那ァ！」
「りんごを掘ってるだと！」うさぎは怒りながら言った。「こい！来てここから出るのを手伝ってくれ！」（さらにガラスが割れる音が聞こえてくる）

“Now tell me, Pat, what’s that in the window?”
“Sure, it’s an arm, yer honour!” (He pronounced it “arrum.”)
“An arm, you goose! Who ever saw one that size? Why, it fills the whole window!”
“Sure, it does, yer honour: but it’s an arm for all that.”
“Well, it’s got no business there, at any rate: go and take it away!”

「さあパット、教えてくれ。窓の中のアレは何なんだ？」
「へい、あれは腕ですぜ旦那ァ！」（彼の発音は「うんで」と言っていた）
「腕ってお前、アホか！あんなでかい腕のやつがいるかってんだ！あんな、窓いっぱいに、全部が腕じゃないか！」
「へい、そのとおりです旦那。でもありゃどう見ても腕ですよ」
「よし、あそこはアイツがいていい場所じゃないぞ。とにかくあそこに行って追っ払ってこい！」

There was a long silence after this, and Alice could only hear whispers now and then; such as, “Sure, I don’t like it, yer honour, at all, at all!” “Do as I tell you, you coward!”, and at last she spread out her hand again, and made another snatch in the air.

長いこと静まり返っていたが、時々こんな囁き声が聞こえてきた。「へい？イヤですよ旦那ァ。ヤダヤダったら！」「やるんだって！この腰抜け！」そしてとうとうアリスは再び手を広げ宙をつかんだ。
