悪意や罪悪感の不在または統計操作
”悪意”とはなんだ？ ”罪悪感”とはなんだ？
今連載中の漫画で、最も続きが気になるのが、『葬送のフリーレン』です。
これは、ファンが自発的にストーリーの年表を作ってインターネット上に公開しているほど、人気が高い漫画です。
連載が始まったころは、あまり目立たなかったのですが、回を重ねるごとに内容が深まってきました。
これについて語りだすと長くなるので、折に触れて取り上げていきたいと思います。
先に引いたのは、これまで登場した魔族の中で最強のキャラクターである、黄金卿マハトのセリフです。魔族は、人間を捕食するとともに、たくさんの人を殺します。殺人は、魔族の本能なのでしょうが、ある時、神父に「そうか・・・わからないのか・・・なんということだ・・・可哀想に・・・」と言われた彼は、冒頭の問いの答えを求めるようになります。
魔族には人類にあって当たり前のなんらかの感情が欠落している。
それはなんだ？
俺は生まれて初めて人類に興味を持った。
もっと知りたいと願った。
その意味で、彼は、魔族にして哲学者です。その答えが得られたら、死んでもいいと思っているようです。
そして、もう一人、魔族にして博物学者である女性キャラクターが登場します。彼女は、マハトの問いにこう答えます。
私達には一生わからない感情だよ。
人によく似たこの姿も人と同じこの言葉もまるで人のような振る舞いも、すべては人を欺き捕食するために獲得した進化の証。
姿形は似ていても私達は人類とは程遠い。
だって私たちは人類の言うところの”人食いの化け物”なんだから。
全く別の生き物なんだよ。
わからない感情があるのだって当たり前のことだ。
彼女は、魔王から教わったという「収斂進化」という概念を用いて、マハトや我々読者にわかりやすく説明してくれます。魔族は人間と、言語によるコミュニケーションが問題なくできるし、抽象化や論理的思考ができるが、人殺しはいとわないというのが非常に興味深いです。
ここまで書いてきて思い出したのが、『羊たちの沈黙』という小説に登場するレクター博士です。彼はインテリであり、殺人鬼でした。ただ、レクター博士の場合、マハトのような「自分はなぜ人と違うのか」という疑問にとらわれることはなかったと思います。『羊たちの沈黙』という小説およびこれを元に作られた映画については、またどこかで取り上げるかもしれません。
マハトがどういう答を得られるのか、その代償に何を支払うことになるのか、とても気になります。
さて、ここからは、人間の問題です。
私は、これまで書いたnoteの記事の中で、たびたび統計資料を引用してきました。何か意見を述べるときは、その根拠となる事実が必要であり、それゆえ、統計資料が信頼できないと、何も言えなくなってしまいます。
しかし、この記事が事実なら、統計数値を操作した人たちには悪意はあったのでしょうか。たぶんなかったと思いたいです。罪悪感はあったでしょうか。あったかもしれませんが、多分強くはなかったのでしょう。しかし、当事者たちの弁明は聞こえてきません。
かかわった人たちの気持ちはどうであれ、このような行為は、公文書偽造にあたるのではないかと思いますが、どうやら起訴されることはなさそうです。偽造なので、いわゆる不作為よりは罪が重いと思うのですが、「後から修正したからいいよね」、とうやむやで終わっていいのでしょうか。
以前、中国の統計は怪しくて信用できない、という記事を読んだことがありますが、まず自分の国の政府にしっかりしてほしいものです。
実は私は、最初に就職したとき、当時の総理府統計局で、データ入力業者に、家計調査票の原本を渡す作業に関わったことがあります。もう４０年も前のことですが、その当時はたぶん、関係者は正しくやっていただろう、と思いたいです。きちんと仕事をした人たちは、この件に関してとても怒っているのではないでしょうか。

Among the manga serialized now, the one that is most worrisome is "Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End". This is a manga that is so popular that fans voluntarily create a chronology of stories and publish it on the Internet. It wasn't very noticeable when the series started, but the content became deeper with each episode. It will take a long time to start talking about this, so I would like to take up it from time to time.
Quoted earlier is a line from Mahat, the Golden Lord, the most powerful character of the demon tribe that has appeared so far. The demons prey on humans and kill many people. Murder is probably an instinct of the demon tribe, but one day, when a priest says to him, "Well...don't you understand...what a pity..." he begins to seek an answer to the question posed at the beginning.
We, the demons, lack some of the natural feelings of humankind. What is it? I became interested in humanity for the first time in my life. I wanted to know more.
In that sense, he is a demon and a philosopher. If he gets the answer, he seems willing to die. Then, another female character who is a demon and a naturalist appears. She answers Mahato's question:
It's an emotion we'll never know. This human-like appearance, the same words as humans, and human-like behavior are all proof of evolution acquired to deceive and prey on humans. Even though they look similar, we are far from humankind. Because we are what humans call "human-eating monsters." It's a completely different creature. It's only natural that there are emotions that you don't understand.
She uses the concept of "convergent evolution" that she learned from the Demon King to explain it to Mahato and we readers in an easy-to-understand manner. It is very interesting that the demons can communicate with humans in language without any problems, can abstract and think logically, but are willing to murder.
After writing this far, I am reminded of Dr. Lecter in the novel "Silence of the Lambs". He was an intelligentsia and a murderer. However, in the case of Dr. Lecter, I don't think he was caught up in the question "Why am I different from other people?" Like Mahato. The novel "The Silence of the Lambs" and the films based on it may be covered somewhere else.
I am very curious to see what kind of answers Mahato will get and what he will pay for it.
Now, here is the human problem.
I have often quoted statistical data in the note articles I have written so far. When you give an opinion, you need the facts on which it is based, and therefore, if the statistical data is unreliable, you cannot say anything.
But if this article is true, was there any malicious intent on the part of those who manipulated the statistical numbers? I would like to think that they probably did not. Did they feel guilty? There may have been, but probably not strongly. However, I don't hear any direct explanation from the people involved.
Regardless of the feelings of those involved in this matter, I suspect that such an act would be a forgery of official documents, but it seems unlikely that they will be prosecuted. Since it is a forgery, I think it is more sinful than so-called omission, but I wonder if it is okay to just say, "It's okay because we corrected those later".
I've read an article that China's statistics are suspicious and unreliable, but first I want the government of my country to be firm.
Actually, when I first got a job, I was involved in the work of handing the original household questionnaire to a data entry company at the Statistics Bureau of the Prime Minister's Office at that time. It was 40 years ago, but I would like to think that the people involved were probably doing it right at that time. I think those who have worked properly are very angry about this.
