82.Charlie Chaplin（チャールズ・チャップリン）19-20世紀、イギリス出身の俳優/映画製作者。チャップリンはロンドンで貧しい少年期を過ごした。彼は10歳で学校を退学し、パントマイム芸人や作業員として働いた。1914年に映画デビューするとアメリカで評判をよび1916年にはアメリカで最も大きな報酬を得る役者となっていた。彼は映画製作における、俳優、監督、脚本、作曲、編集など全てを行う初めての人物であった。彼は貧困層を描くことに熱心で、平和主義者や共産主義者からも共感を得た。FBIは彼に関する2,000ページもｎ及ぶ調査書を作成したが、彼が共産党員であったり、反逆行為を企てた証拠は無かった。彼は愛国主義は一種の狂気だと考え、国際主義を唱えていただけだった。

◎無声映画時代の作品の中の彼の姿と、私が幼いころの晩年の彼の姿とはうまく結びつかなかったのをよく憶えている。戦後、彼の人気は急速に落ちてしまったが、彼が映画界に残した影響は大きい。日本にも4度来ており、最初の訪問には五・一五事件に遭遇している。反乱兵士の最初の計画では、チャップリン殺害も入っていたという。来日時にエビの天ぷらを一度に30本食べたとか。山高帽に薄汚れたモーニングとステッキという彼の作った放浪者のスタイルはいまだに一つのアイコンとなっている。
