54.Charles Darwin（チャールズ・ダーウィン）19世紀イギリスの博物学者。ダーウィンは1859年に刊行した『種の起源～自然淘汰の方法による』の中で、動植物の種は単純な生命体から進化してできたものだと説いた。彼の説によれば、それぞれの種で多くの個体が生まれ、環境に適したものが生存（これを「自然淘汰」と呼んだ）して、その変異を次の世代に引き継ぎ、やがて新しい種が出現するという。この考えは聖書を信じる人たちにとっては、創造における神の役割を認めないものだと感じられた。しかし、徐々に彼の説は科学者に受け容れられていき、生物学や人類学に変容をもたらせた。

◎彼は自らを地質学者と称し、生物進化への興味も地質学者として化石を調べる中で培われたものだった。彼の打ち立てた進化論は修正をされながら現代でも生き続けている。彼の優れていたところは、仮説を立て、緻密な観察を行い、仮説を検証するという科学的な手法に真摯であり、驚くほど細かな観察を目的意識をもって行ったことにあるように思う。自然淘汰や進化論は彼が初めて思いついたものではないが、科学的な手法でそれを説明したという点で偉大な人物だった。
