実は家康公が将軍でいたのはわずか2年でした。

駿府での家康公の役割
In 1605, Tokugawa Ieyasu retired from shogunate just two years after being given the title.
1605年、徳川家康は将軍の称号を得たわずか2年後に将軍を引退しました。
He passed over his position to his son, Hidetada.
彼は将軍職を息子の秀忠に譲りました。
Tokugawa Ieyasu had his reasons for giving up the shogunate so soon.
徳川家康には将軍職をすぐに辞める理由がありました。
Some daimyo thought that Ieyasu became Shogun by chance after winning the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600.
大名の中には関ケ原の戦いに勝って、徳川家康はたまたま将軍になったのだと考えている者もいました。
Therefore, the shogun’s political position was unstable.
それ故に、将軍の政治的立場は不安定でした。
Lord Ieyasu wanted to clearly demonstrate the succession of the shogun’s title among the Tokugawa family.
将軍職は徳川家の中で継承されるのだと言うことを家康公ははっきりと示したいと考えました。
The succession was necessary to show to all daimyo that they did not have any chance to be the shogun.
徳川の人間が将軍を継ぐことは必須条件でした。他の人々は将軍になれないのだと知らしめたのです。
For Ieyasu, grooming Hidetada to become a capable shogun was a pressing need.
家康にとって秀忠を能力のある将軍に育て上げることは急務でした。
Ieyasu closely controlled the daimyo across Japan from Sumpu.
家康は日本中の大名たちを駿府からしっかりと統制しました。
For example, he forced them to support the national project of building Sumpu Castle and the city.
例えば、大名たちに強制的に駿府城や駿府の街を造る国家プロジェクトを支持するようにさせました。
In addition, Lord Ieyasu worked hard to stabilize the Edo feudal government by drafting its basic social rules such as the ’Buke Shohatto’ (Laws for the Military Houses).
さらに家康公は江戸幕府を安定させるため熱心に取り組み、「武家諸法度」のような基礎となる社会的な決まりを駿府で起草しました。
He ordered Goto Shozaburo to mint the first gold coins in Sumpu.
後藤庄三郎には駿府で最初の小判を鋳造するよう命じました。
They became the standard gold coins during the Edo period.
その小判は江戸時代で使われる標準的な小判になりました。
Also, Lord Ieyasu met with many foreigners to get profits through international trading.
また家康公は多くの外国人と会い、国際貿易を通して利益を得ようとしました。
Those foreigners recognized that Ieyasu was the de facto shogun because permissions were given by him.
これらの外国人は許可が家康公から出るので、家康公が実質上の将軍だと認識しました。
