江戸城無血開城と言えば、江戸で行われた西郷隆盛と勝海舟の会談にスポットライトが当たります。しかし、江戸から駿府まで官軍に命を狙われながらも、西郷隆盛と会い、なんとかして戦いを回避しようとした山岡鉄舟の働きがあってこそ。「静岡ん衆なら山岡鉄舟を推すだよ」（訳：静岡の人々だったら山岡鉄舟を推すのですよ）

Yamaoka Tesshu was in a sticky situation in Yui (the present-day Shimizu Ward).
山岡鉄舟は由比で窮地に陥りました。
He was surrounded by many opponents of the Imperial force.
彼は反対派である官軍に囲まれてしまいました。
The local prestigious inn called ‘Bogakutei-Fujiya’ hid Yamaoka Tesshu by disguising him as a fisherman. And the owner let him escape from its hidden stairs.
地元の有名な宿屋であった「望嶽亭藤屋（ぼうがくていふじや）」は山岡鉄舟を漁師に変装させて匿いました。そして主人は彼を隠し階段から逃がしてあげました。
Yamaoka Tesshu left a state-of-the-art French-made gun for the inn’s owner to show his gratitude.
山岡鉄舟は感謝の気持ちを示すため、宿屋の主人にフランス製の最新の銃を置いていきました。
Yamaoka Tesshu secretly entered the city of Sumpu and reached Saigo’s accommodation, Matsuzaki Denbei’s residence in Kami-Tenma-cho district on March 9.
山岡鉄舟は密かに駿府のまちに入り、西郷の宿泊先であった、上伝馬町の松崎伝兵衛の屋敷に3月9日にたどり着きました。
The negotiation between Saigo and Yamaoka was a success, which opened the door to the more famous dialogue between Saigo Takamori and Katsu Kaishu in Edo on March 13 and 14.
西郷と山岡の交渉は成功裏に終わりました。それがもっと有名である、3月13、14日の江戸で行われた西郷隆盛と勝海舟の会談へと扉を開きました。

Saigo originally planned to attack the Edo castle on March 15.
元々、西郷は3月15日に江戸城を攻撃する予定でした。
It was slightly postponed by these talks.
辛くも会談により回避されました。
The bloody war in Edo has been avoided thanks to the meeting in Tenma-cho.
江戸が血まみれになるような戦いは伝馬町の会談があったからこそ回避されました。

This preparatory talk by Yamaoka and Saigo is not well known among the Japanese.
山岡と西郷のこの予備会談は日本人によく知られていません。
But I believe that this is an important factor in the Meiji restoration.
しかし明治維新の重要な要因であると私は信じています。
山岡鉄舟は明治時代、この鉄舟寺の再興に力を尽くすなど静岡のために尽力しました。
