→直訳して『混みあったレストランの煙幕を通して』？
cityの中のレストランなのでまぁ騒がしいんだろうな、その中での会話やそこに繋がる生活を想起しました。smokescreenは煙幕、何かの本ではぐらかしたり本音を隠すことをタバコの煙に隠すという表現があったことを思い出しました。そう言えば日本語でも『煙に巻く』とか言ったりしますよね。そんな意訳のニュアンス。
