This summer, I finally dug into @michael.chabon ‘s The Yiddish Policemen's Union, a story set in an alternative present in which the US provisioned land in Alaska as a rufuge for Jewish victims of Nazi Germany (as nearly actually happened in 1940). Sitka, Alaska is now the center of Jewish culture, home to millions of European Jews and their descendants. Without giving too much away, we could say that the plot hinges on an architecture, and on a scheme hatched by [slight spoiler alert] a paramilitary group backed by an evangelical Christian Zionist American government.
Chabon’s writing is vivid, and I’ve been a bit obsessed with this imaginary Sitka, something like a 19th century Vienna in the Arctic. What would the material culture of this place be like? How would the trauma and traditions of people from the old world experience modernity in this unique climate and cultural situation (tropical modernism => arctic modernism?)? Would Jewish design and architecture meld with the indigenous traditions (Tlingit talit, anyone?), or would history again rhyme?
This and my next few posts are speculations set in this alternative present - “worldbuilding” the architecture and artifacts of a place that, had history gone a slightly different direction, I might have been an citizen of.
