なんちゃって平安朝日記 Vol.3 探しものはなんですか？
わくらばにあまたとし失われし文（ふみ）古き袋のうちより見つく。その文はるけきことくにチェコの友より来たり。さりながら30年以上のいにしへのことなればすなはちそのくにチェコスロバキアと申すなり。
かの国に友を訪ぬれば友われを新家（あらや）へ迎（むかへ）てもてはやしけり。その家（やか）友が日曜大工にてみづから構（かま）ひしものなり。いとめづらしきかな。友曰く「さきつころこの家なりあひければわれらも今日よりこの家に住まふ。」いとありがたくうれしかりけり。
友われを寝処（ねどころ）へ相具（あひぐ）して壁にペンキにて書かれたる文字を示せば、その文字「ウェルカムこんぶ」と読めるなり。いとかたじけなくありがたくわが衣手はつゆに濡れつつ。

あまたとし 長年
はるけきことくに 遠い異国
すなはち その頃
もてはやす 歓待する
かまふ 建てる
めづらし めったにない
なりあふ 完成する
相具す 連れて行く
かたじけなし ありがたい
ありがたし めったにないほど尊い
I have a penpal in Czecho Republic. Decades ago he wanted a Japanese penpal and placed an ad on an English paper issued in Japan. I was very curious about the country which I knew almost nothing about. It was before unification of East and West Germany in 1990. So his homeland was called Czechoslovakia back then. This is how we started exchanging letters.
Russian was taught as the second language at schools in Czechoslovakia. There were very few who could speak English. My penpal was one of those. He loved The Beatles and wanted to understand the lyrics. It made him to study English by himself. Isn't it cool?
Eventually the world entered the Internet age and we started writing via internet. However one day my computer crashed and all data was gone. That was a nightmare. I lost his email address.
I am terribly bad at organizing things. I believed old letters from him were in one of the boxes that I brought from Japan. I tried to find them but it was not successful.
I visited him and his family twice in 1990 and 1993. I intended to visit Czecho Republic again before I left New York for long. It is much easier to visit the country from New York than from Tokyo. Unfortunately the desire did not come true not only because of Covid but also because I lost his contact.
But you know what? A miracle happened to me. Recently I discovered his old letters by chance! Of course I wrote a snail mail to my old friend in Czecho Republic. A week later he wrote me back digitally. Now we connected again!

らうす・こんぶ／仕事は日本語を教えたり、日本語で書いたりすること。21年間のニューヨーク生活に終止符を打ち、東京在住。やっぱり日本語で話したり、書いたり、読んだり、考えたりするのがいちばん気持ちいいので、これからはもっと日本語と深く関わっていきたい。
