【English Lyric】 Creepy Nuts - The Night When Nue Sings Is ぬえの鳴く夜は
英語の翻訳を一度やってみたいと思っていた。ネイティブやビジネス英語には届かないが、読み書きに関しては勉強の科目として比較的得意な方だったし大学時点のTOEICは(勘含め)600点以上取っていた。たまに暇な時に洋楽の歌詞が何を歌っているか調べたり、映画・漫画・アニメ・ゲーム作品の和訳・英訳がどんな風になっているか比較したりしている。
何度か人に英語をどうやって勉強すればいいか聞かれたことがあるのだが、とりあえず「好きな漫画の洋書買え」「サブスク動画で英語字幕付けろ」と言っている。(おすすめかどうかは知らない、効果は未知数)
Creepy Nutsが海外向けに『二度寝』(+『Bling-Bang-Bang-Born』『ビリケン』)公式英語歌詞動画を出している。
『不適切にもほどがある!』の主題歌なので昔と今で変わった日本を御伽噺と絡めたリリック。
浦島→Urashima from the Folktale
玉手箱→The Box(玉+手箱なので固有名詞ではない)
竜宮城→The Undersea Palace(海底宮殿)
鬼ヶ島→The Demon Island
と訳されているが
マサカリ→Kintaro's Ax
は情報量増えていないか? マサカリは金太郎の専売特許じゃなくないか? "Broadax"でよくないか?…と勝手に思ったり。
そこまでヒップホップに詳しくないし、Creepy Nutsの物凄いファンというわけではないが、普通に好きだし他の歌詞の翻訳をやってみたくなったのでネット翻訳や辞書を駆使して『ぬえの鳴く夜は』の英訳をしてみる。
自由研究的にやったので公式訳があって違ったり、文法とかに間違いあってもご了承。

普通に"tightrope walking(綱渡り)"や"run a risk(危険を冒す)"でいいが、鵺なので虎に関わる慣用表現の"ride a tiger(虎にまたがる、危険を冒す)"とした。
一物も与えてくれんかった天に
弓引いたいつかのワナビー
To the father who didn't give anything
A wannabe who drew a bow one day
「天は二物を与えず」の"天"なので"The Father(創始者、父なる神)"とした。父親の意味合いでで遺伝的、家庭的なニュアンスも孕んでくる。
鵺は弓矢で退治される。
楽器一つも弾けないくせに
ほら楽しむ器ならある ちゃっかり

"cheekily(生意気に、厚かましく)"が"ちゃっかり"と掛かる。

When I realized, I was just a deadbeat
「親のすね(ァ)」と口語で歌っているのでスネア、ハイハット、ベース、ドラムスが掛かっている。"prodigal son that only eats and sleeps(食って寝るだけの放蕩息子)"でいいが”deadbeat(怠け者、居候、未納者、出来損い)”とした。ただし語源的にbeatは音のビートではないしdeadは死ではない。
ケツにケリ入れられたあの日から
見よう見まね 聞きかじり 耳年増
Since that day when I was kicked my ass
Monkey see, monkey do, a smattering, know-it-all
"kick one's ass"で"尻を蹴る、急かす、打ち負かす、最高・クール・敵わないと思わせる"。
"Monkey see, monkey do(見様見真似、猿真似)"で鵺なので猿の他に狸は無理にしても虎と蛇の慣用表現を入れたくなった。
キーが合わんなら外してぶっ壊す
土足で上り込むその鼓膜

「糠に釘」に近い慣用表現は"drive a stake into sawdust(おがくずに杭を打つ)"。「馬の耳に念仏」は"preach to deaf ears(聾に教えを説く)"または"preach to the wind(風に教えを説く)"。"grumble"は"不平不満を言う"。
「キレイなお唄の添え物でイイワ」
"It's just enough as a garnish for POP songs."
J-POPでラップは取って付けたように扱われることへの皮肉・自虐。シェフに掛かるので"garnish(ガルニ、パセリやミント等の付け合わせ)"とした。

意訳。性交の往復運動のスラングで"piston"は伝わるには伝わるが"thrust"が一般的。蛇に関する慣用表現としてスラングで男性器も意味する"python"としたが、普通に"thrust","piston"でいい。
余談だが"python"は「ギリシャ神話の怪物・ピュトン」→「ニシキヘビ」→「スラングで男性器」→「コメディグループのモンティ・パイソン」→「プログラミング言語」と意味が遷移している。
