KRS-Oneは、単なる音楽を超えて、ヒップホップを通して幅広い活動をしてきている人物。ヒップホップが商業化されてきた90年代から、文化的搾取と物質主義を拒否し、平和、愛、団結、非暴力といった本来の原則に根付いたヒップホップを広めてきました。96年にはThe Temple of Hip Hopを設立し、米国に限らず欧州の様々な都市でも、ヒップホップカルチャーの理解に向けた講義を提供してきており、これまで米国の500を超える大学で講義を行い、書籍も出版。2001年にはヒップホップを通した非暴力と健康への取り組みが国際文化として国連にも認められています。KRS-Oneは、ヒップホップが単なる音楽ジャンルではなく、生き方であることを体現している人物であると言えるでしょう。

Beefは、KRS-One によって1990年にリリースされた曲。「肉はナンバーワンのドラッグだ」というフレーズとともに、肉を食べることの弊害を伝えるこの曲は、多くの人に影響を与える作品となりました。Wu-Tang ClanのRZAをはじめ、この曲を聴いたことがきっかけで菜食を選ぶようになったヒップホップアーティストは少なくありません。
