55回目 "Midnight's Children" を読む（第９回）。真夜中の子供たちの会議(Conference) の倒壊は民衆の気持ちと国家の動きの齟齬そのものです。
今回投稿での読書対象はエピソード 18 ’Commander Sabarmati's baton' pages 350-370 です。
1. Midnight Children's Conference なる会議。
この会議は、語り手サリームの頭の中に大勢の 10‐11 才の子供たちが全国から集まって来て時々開催されます。積極的に発言する子供がいる一方、集まり来たものの何をするところかさえ頭にない子供までいます。その様子、今回の会議にあっては次の如くです。読者は誕生後10年になるインドの国家の状態を子供会議という隠喩によって学ぶ・復習することになります。
［原文 1-1］ The gradual disintegration of the Midnight children's Conference -- which finally fell apart on the day the Chinese armies came down over the Himalayas to humiliate the Indian fauji - was already well under way. When novelty wears off, boredom, and then dissension, must inevitably ensue. Or (to put it another way) when a finger is mutilated, and fountains of blood flow out, all manner of vilenesses become possible … whether or not the cracks in the Conference were the (active-metaphorical) result of my finger-loss, they were certainly widening.
［和訳 1-1］ 真夜中の子供たちの会議はやがて発生する事件、中国の軍隊がヒマラヤの山岳地帯の峠を越えて進入を果たし、インド側の軍隊のひ弱さが世間に露見する事件が起こった丁度その日に分裂・解散したのですが、それに先立つこの時点で既に分裂につながる動きが徐々に始まっていました。何であれその目新しさが失われると、退屈感の出現そして崩壊に至るほかないのです。言い換えるならば、一本の指に損傷が加えられ、血が噴き出すというようなことがどこかで起これば、その事実はあらゆる種類の邪悪行為がいつどこででも起こり得ることを意味するのです。この子供会議に発生した仲たがいは、それが私の指の負傷事故（能動的で暗喩の出来事）に原因したのか否かに拘わらず、その後もその溝は広がるばかりでした。

この時に開催された Conference のもう少し具体的な様子が半ページほど後に描き出されます（ここに引用します）。いつぞの事であったか、遠い昔に読んだ「動物農場 "Animal Farm" by George Orwell」の雰囲気を思い出させます。
［原文 1-2］ And there were other factors at work as well. Children, however magical, are not immune to their parents; and as the prejudices and world-views of adults began to take over their minds, I found children from Maharashtra loathing Gujaratis, and fair-skinned northerners reviling Dravidian 'blackies'; there were religious rivalries; and class entered our councils. The rich children turned up their noses at being in such lowly company; Brahmins began to feel uneasy at permitting even their thoughts to touch the thoughts of untouchables; while, among the low-born, the pressures of poverty and Communism were becoming evident … and, on top of all this, there were clashes of personality, and the hundred squalling rows which are unavoidable in a parliament composed entirely of half-grown brats.

しかし、この小説にあっては、「動物農場」を思わせた上記文章に続いて、すかさず現実の政治が引き合いにだされます。ラシュディ氏であるからこその「リアリズム」と言うべきでしょうか？
［原文 1-3］ In this way the Midnight Children's Conference fulfilled the prophecy of the Prime Minister and became, in truth, a mirror of the nation; the passive-literal mode was at work, although I railed against it, with increasing desperation, and broadcast, with a mental voice as uncontrollable as its physical counterpart, 'Do not let this happen! Do not permit the endless duality of masses-and-classes, capital-and-labour, them-and-us to come between us! We,' I cried passionately, 'must be a third principle, we must be the force which drives between the horns of the dilemma; for only by being other, by being new, can we fulfil the promise of our birth!'
［和訳 1-3］ 以上にお話しした通り、この真夜中の子供たちの会議は総理大臣がかつて口にした「予言」を現実のものにしたのでした。すなわち国家の鏡像を出現させたのでした。能動的で具象の存在として出現させたのです。私が必死になって抵抗し、その旨、広く放送で叫んだのです。心の中での叫びであったとはいえ、実際に声に出すのと変わらない程感情一杯に叫んだのです。「こんなことを起こしてはなりません。私たち仲間にあっては、大衆と上位階層の人々とに分かれて、資本家と労働者とに分かれて、奴らと自分たちとに分かれて双方が対立することを何時までも続けるなんて許せません。」 私は感情一杯に叫び続けました。「私たちは、対立を乗り越える第３の発想で動くのです。自らが対立する双方の真ん中に立って、互いに相手の立場に立って、あるいは新しい発想に基づいて動く力になるのです。そして私たちの誕生した日の約束を全うしようではありませんか」と叫びました。

上に引用した文章に "active-metaphorical" と "passive-literal" なる記憶に留まるフレーズがあります。これらに加えて "passive-metaphorical" と "active-literal" なるフレーズが取り上げられ、このエピソードでは議論されることになります。
2. 語り手のサリームが抱いた正義感・憤怒が、新聞記事で見ているだけだったはずの殺人事件を引き起こす元凶になります。
この小説、これまでの物語とは次元を異にする、生々しいシーンが、突然に読者の心に衝撃を加えます。幸いなことに、すぐあとに続くコミカルなシーンのおかげで、衝撃から回復は可能です。
きっかけはちょっとした悪戯の「メモ書き」のような置手紙です。新聞紙の活字を切り抜き張り合わせてあります。

『 サバルマティ司令官 殿へ
奥さまが日曜日の朝、コラバ通りにお出かけになる訳をご存じですか？ 』
このメモ（密告メモ）が引き起こした事態は次の通りです。事実を伝えるだけの単純明快な文章のようでいて、読めば読むほど、工夫をこらしたこの文章、不気味であると共にユーモラスでもある文章には感心させられます。
［原文 2-1］ Like Sin, the crescent moon, I acted from a distance upon the tides of the world … while a mule talked on a screen, Commander Sabarmati visited the naval arsenal. He signed out a good, long-nosed revolver; also ammunition. He held, in his left hand, a piece of paper on which an address had been written in a private detective's tidy hand; in his right hand, he grasped the upholstered gun. By taxi, the Commander arrived at Colaba Causeway. He paid off the cab, walked gun-in-hand down a narrow gully past shirt-stalls and toyshops, and ascended the staircase of an apartment block set back from the gully at the rear of a concrete courtyard.

［原文 2-2］ He rang the door bell of apartment 18c; it was heard in 18b by an Anglo-Indian teacher giving private Latin tuition. When Commander Sabarmati's wife Lila answered the door, he shot her twice in the stomach at point-blank range. She fell backwards; he marched past her, and found Mr Homi Catrack rising from the toilet, his bottom unwiped, pulling frantically at his trousers. Commander Vinoo Sabarmati shot him once in the genitals, once in the heart and once through the right eye. The gun was not silenced; but when it had finished speaking, There was an enormous silence in the apartment. Mr Catrak sat down on the toilet after he was shot and seemed to be smiling.

この後には、このシーン、このひと騒動にとどめを打つ滑稽この上ないシーンが用意されています。ご自身で本文をお読みになるようお勧めいたします。
3. 読者をこれでもかこれでもかと引き付けて放さない仕掛け。
聞き手である王様に飽きられては命がなくなると必死で面白い話を繰り出すシエラザーデに負けじとサリームの話は興味深い話題が満載ですが、もう一つ、読者の関心をキープする秘訣が、読者に折を見て質問を投げかけることのようです。「以前に出てきた話を記憶していますかか、そうでないと面白いところを気付き損なうぞ」と授業時間の始めに復習テストをする中学校の先生のやり方です。
［原文 3］ It is not untrue to say that what came to be known as the Sabarmati affair had its real beginning at a dingy cafe in the north of the city, when a stowaway watched a ballet of circling hands.
［和訳 3］ サバルマティ事件として世間に記憶されることになった出来事の真の意味での始まりは、この都市（ボンベイ）の北部地区にある薄汚いコーヒー店での出来事だったのです。ある男の児が物陰から、複数本の腕がダンスを踊るがごとく揺れ動くのをこっそりと見つめていたことがことの始まりだったのです。《 ずっと以前のエピソードに出てきたシーン、Pioneer Cafeでの出来事ですよ！ 覚えていますか？ 》
