31% of UK Students Say University Not Good Value
英国の学生の31%、大学は十分な価値がないと述べる

A survey has found that 31% of UK students believe that their university courses are poor or very poor value, up from 29% the year before. However, that number is not as high as the 34% who thought university was poor value in 2017.

There are about 1.8 million undergraduate students in UK universities, and the Student Academic Experience Survey was taken by about 10,000 of them.

The survey also found that 39% of students were happy with the value of their courses, down from 41% the year before. And 64% said they would not change their school or course if they had a second chance — the same as the year before.

Students in Scotland felt they got the best value for their money, with 57% agreeing that university was good value, although this was down from 63% the year before.

However, Scottish students can get their first university degree for free — and students from other parts of the UK have to pay if they go there just for university. For students in other parts of the UK, university costs up to $11,600 per year.

Only 11% of students agreed that they had "life satisfaction," and just 14% said they were happy. Eighty-four percent of students agreed that universities should be able to contact their parents if there were serious concerns about a student's mental health.

Discussion:

■1: What are your thoughts on the findings of this survey?

Personally, I think that it is a big problem that 30% of students decide that university education has low value.

Teachers should acknowledge the reality of not providing an attractive education for students. We may even have to consider whether unattractive universities should survive.

On the other hand, this is what I want students to think about. The fact that only 39% of the students are satisfied with the education process indicates that nearly two-thirds of students think that going to college is of little significance. In other words, it doesn't matter whether you go or not.

Then, they don't have to pay for their education and go to school until. I think they should have valuable experiences and spend the time to find the dream they want to live their lives.

■2: Did you go to university? If so, how would you rate the value of your courses?

The department I majored in is a highly specialized field, and I learned the content that directly linked to my choice of work after graduation as a student.

Therefore, I evaluate that it was a very meaningful university curriculum.

I was fortunate to have a stable financial and political environment, as I was able to receive sufficient education and concentrate on my studies before entering university.

However, I think that the results would not have been achieved without making efforts with the goal.

■3: How do students typically pay for university where you live? Please explain your answer.

In Japan, it is generally divided into national universities and private universities. Since national universities are subsidized by the state, annual tuition fees are relatively low.

According to the Ministry of Education's data on annual tuition fees, national universities are about 500,000 yen/year, and private universities are about 800,000 yen/year.

Many students depend on their parents for tuition. Some talented students get scholarships themselves. Those who cannot afford the tuition are earning part-time jobs.

■4: Would you argue that university education should be free for everyone?

I think university education should be divided into free and paid.

I think it is cruel when there are students who cannot receive sufficient education due to their natural economic and political conditions.
Therefore, some level of education should be provided free of charge.

However, you should also leave paid college education. It is because we think that it takes money to secure highly educators and to conduct cutting-edge education and research. I think these universities generally serve as targets for students to strive for.

I also think that large-scale reform of the state is necessary to make all university education free.
Japan has a large financial weighting in the nursing care field, but stress in the nursing care field may occur in order to focus on education.

■5: Do you think universities should be able to contact parents if there are concerns about a student's mental health?

I think the university should be able to contact the student's parents.

University students often start living alone for the first time. Most of the students are around the age of 20, and it is an unstable period when they grow up from children to adults both in terms of age and economy.

I think that it is necessary to support the families and the society to protect them during these unstable times. I think independent students who do not need the support of their families do not have these problems in the first place.

■1:If your child had just finished high school, would you encourage them to go to university?

If my child has a definite future hope, I will give priority to his hope. If he considers going to college to be a disadvantage, he does not have to go to college.

If he doesn't have a clear dream, I would recommend him to go on to college. That may include the case of wanting a moratorium.

The biggest reason is that leaving a university is a great advantage for getting a job. Looking back on myself, I think that few students had a clear future outlook when they graduated from high school.

■2:What university degrees would you say are the most useful?

I think the answer depends on how you think about life.

Some people may want to become a medical practitioner to save a virus-infected patient.
Some may wish to study world history in order to solve the problem of racism.
Both of their choices are respectful attitudes, and I don't think they can be distinguished.

For me, I think that if you focus on what you can do for the benefit of society and others, you can make a great choice in any degree.

■3:What did you enjoy most about your time at high school or college?
When I was in high school, I worked hard with my friends to study for a university exam.

On my days off, I used to go to the library to study and to attend mock exams held in urban areas.

It was very tough at the time, but it is now an irreplaceable memory for us to talk about our dreams and encourage each other.

■4:If you were to start your education all over again, would you do anything differently?

If I want to start my education again, I want to study English from an early age.

Recently, school children are learning English from elementary school education.

In addition, there are English teaching materials that you can study for free, such as youtube and podcast, as globalization has progressed to a level that is not comparable to what it used to be. You can expect to become an international person more efficiently.

■5:Colleges are places where pebbles are polished and diamonds are dimmed. — Robert Green Ingersoll. What do you think Ingersoll meant by this?

I think pebbles are students with general abilities, and diamonds are students with exceptional talent.

In other words, college education is good at growing average students on average, but not good at finding talented students and developing their strengths.
