【英語で読書感想文】Long Bright River by Liz Moore リズ・ムーア『果てしなき輝きの果てに』

Title: Long Bright River
Author: Liz Moore

This book reminded me of Hillbilly Elegy, a best-selling autobiography by J.D. Vance. Both books showed rage, discontent and feeling of desperation of America’s working-class white people living in a certain area. While Hillbilly Elegy is a non-fiction based on Vance’s experiences in his hometown, a Rust Belt town in Ohio, Long Bright River is a suspense fiction but the author Liz Moore said when she wrote this story, she was inspired by her rough neighborhood in Philadelphia.

Long Bright River follows two sisters, Mickey and Kacey. They grew up in a Philadelphia neighborhood hit by the opioid crisis. Their mother died from an overdose, so they went to live with their grandmother however she neglected them and refused to let Mickey receive a better education. Mickey became a police officer and Kacey became a drug addict living on the street. The sisters used to care about each other but now totally grew further apart. One day Kacey went missing without a word and at the same time, a serial murder case occurred in the area. Mickey desperately tried to find her sister whom she no longer talked to while trying to solve the serial murder case.

This book is categorized as suspense, but it is also a well written literary fiction in my opinion. The story has many layers including painful family saga, Mickey’s current struggle as a working single mother, and social issues in the city. I couldn’t put it down for the last half of the book and I definitely loved some twists. This is one of the best reads of 2020 to me.

=====
邦題、”果て”を二回入れるのってどういう意図なんだろう?って思った記憶が。
