クリストバル・コロンの船

生まれ育った土地がら、昔から船に興味があった。
そしてモノを作る欲求と海に出る冒険の共通性と矛盾を考え、この作品展を開催した。

クリストバル･コロンの船

海洋に立ち向かって未知なるものを想う'時、人は船をつくる。その最も原始的な道具のひとつである船は、人類の欲求を駆りたて、多くの民族を地上のあらゆる土地に移動させた。現在、船に象徴される道具などの進歩によって発達した人類の社会は、その過剰に気づき、かつての環境を取り戻そうとしはじめた。そして、環境保護の一環として、人間は自らの支配下にある動植物の移動を部分的に禁止している。しかし、人類そのものは、多くの民族が、他の土地で暮らし続けているのが現状だ。人の欲望から強制移動にいたるまでその要因はさまざまだ。中には、破壊されてしまった民族さえある。これは、今、多く語られている環境破壊と何が違うのだろう。環境について完璧に語るには、生まれた土地で死ななくてはならない。しかし、我々はどうしても船をつくりたいのだ。私は常にこの矛盾に向かいあって制作しなければならないと痛感している。クリストバル･コロンの船は、未知なる世界に対する人類の義務と、自然環境における人類の破壊行為の両方を積んで、約500年前に出航した。

The SHIP OF CHRISTOBAL COLON

When one sees the ocean and thinks about the un-known world, he builds a ship. A ship, one of the most primitive human tools, arose from the desire of people and took them everywhere in the world. Now human society having developed by the improvement of tools like ships begins to be aware that they've gone too far. They begin to restore natural environment. Actually they ban transportation of certain animals and plants. But how about the human race? Lots of people live in places far away from their home. Some were driven by their greed, some were forced to move away from their home. We know there are even some people which have almost been annihilated. I think this is also a form of environmental disturbance. If you want to talk about the environment perfectly, you have to die where you were born. Still, we as a human being, cannot conquer our instinct, our strong desire of building a ship. I fully realize that I have to create my work always facing this contradiction. The ship of Christobal Colon set sail some 500 years ago loaded with the human responsibility, to the people of the unknown world and the human act of environmental destruction.
