クリスマス。由来や意味合いはさておき、信者であろうがなかろうが、人が人として人に優しくなれる日だと思いたい。少なくともそういう気持ちを持てる時期であってほしい。

実に多くのクリスマス・ソングが存在します。ここから数日はそれらをちょっと取り上げようかと。最初はご存知Ella Fitzgerald。オーラというか、圧というか、まろやかで実に人間的な温かみに溢れる声の持ち主。古今東西ずーっと愛され続けているジャズ・シンガーのひとりです。

基本的に欧米で活動する音楽家たちにとってクリスマス・シーズンは切っても切れない間柄。下世話な言い方をすると稼ぎ時ですし、そもそもキリスト教徒であればクリスマスはただのイベントではなく大事な行事です。だからクリスマス・ソングを無数に歌い、それ用のアルバムを出し、それ用のライヴを演る。だってクリスマスなんだから。

“Frosty the Snowman”は、クリスマス・アルバム「Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas」（1960）収録のもの。ジャズ、ブルースなど様々な音楽性が詰まった興味深いアルバムの中、この曲はとても可愛らしい小曲。軽やかに歌うEllaは子どもを宥めている母親のよう。軽いんだけど深く、跳ねてるんだけど落ち着いている空気感…そう簡単にできるものではありません。当時43歳の彼女はこの時点でもう比類なき領域にいた、という証拠です。直接クリスマスを歌ったものではなく主人公は「雪だるま」ですが、子供心と大人の目線を程よくブレンドした素敵な歌詞も素敵。だってクリスマスなんだから。
