接ぎ木英語 Grafted English

私は自分の英語を時々 “接ぎ木英語”と紹介します。

言語を木に例えれば、私たちほとんどの日本人が英語を学ぶ場合、日本語という幹に英語という新しい枝を途中から接ぎ木しているようなもの、という意味です。

（これまでの中学生、12歳の時に英語学習を始めるたわけですから、この時が接ぎ木の時期だったのです。）

その結果として英語技能はある程度は身に着きます。

しかし、多くの日本人は英語に触れた時には英語を日本語で処理します。それは私も同じです。

ですから、速いスピードの内容や会話ではネイティブとは同じ理解度が得られないのです。

このように、接ぎ木英語には残念ながら、限界があるのです。

I sometimes refer to my English as “a grafted English”.

If we compare a language to a tree, when most of us Japanese learn English, it is as if we were grafting a new branch, English, onto the trunk, Japanese.

(So far, most of us started learning English when we were in junior high school, at the age of 12, so this is the time of language grafting.)

As a result, English skills can be acquired to a certain extent.

But most of us process English in Japanese when we are exposed to English. That is the case with me as well.

That is why we cannot fully understand the content of speeches and/or conversations spoken naturally and rapidly at the same level as native speakers can.

Thus, grafted English unfortunately has its limitation.

それを取り除くにはどうすればいいのでしょう。

一つは英語の学習時期を早めること（12歳では遅すぎます。）です。

もう一つ、更に大切なことは、日本語と英語に触れあう機会、すなわち聞く、話す、読む、書く、のすべてにおいて、その時間を等分に、50：50にすることです。

このような語学環境はほとんどありませが、日本国内において海外留学もせずに理想的な英語教育環境を整えている人も散見します。

One of the answers is to start learning English earlier (12 years old is too late).

The other one, what is more important, is that we need to make sure that the opportunities for exposure to Japanese and English - listening, speaking, reading, and writing - are equally split, 50:50.

However, such a language learning environment is rarely available.

But there are some who have created an ideal educational environment for learning English in Japan without even studying abroad.

ニュースのように既知の事実を聴き、又は、テーマを決めて話す場合には相当程度、英語を理解できる人、あるいは、いくら英語検定テストで優秀な成績を収めている人でも同じように感じる人は多いでしょう。

外国語を勉強している多くの人は外国語の理解度には限界もあることを知った上で、それでもそれに挫けずに努力を重ねる価値と成果を楽しむことが大切です。

English in movies, there being a limit in understanding English. I agree to them.

Many people who can understand English to a considerable extent when listening to known facts such as the news or speaking on a specific theme may feel the same way, and it may be the case with even those who have achieved excellent results in English certification tests.

It is important for us many people, those who are studying foreign languages, to know that there are limits to their understanding of foreign languages, and yet not be discouraged by them and enjoy the value and results of their efforts.
