The first group of 13 Israeli hostages arrived in Israel on Friday evening, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed. The hostages, who have been held captive by Hamas for more than 49 days, are with special forces completing medical assessments before they are transported to Israeli hospitals, where they will be reunited with their families, the IDF said in a statement.

The release is part of an agreement reached between Hamas and Israel to release 50 hostages and 150 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons over the course of a four-day truce that began on Friday morning.

Earlier, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the release of 12 Thai hostages who were also taken by Hamas during its cross-border attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7. According to Haaretz, the group of Thais crossed into Israel and are currently en route to Assaf Harofeh Hospital.

The Palestinian prisoners primarily include women and minors under the age of 19, according to a list received by the Israel Prison Service and reported in the Times of Israel. A statement issued by the IPS said the process to release the Palestinian prisoners has begun. They will first be transferred from the Ofer Prison on the West Bank to the Bitunia checkpoint, where they will be released.

Several trucks carrying humanitarian aid and fuel also entered the Gaza Strip via the Rafah border crossing shortly after the four-day truce began, according to officials and media reports. A spokesperson for the Rafah crossing administration confirmed the aid in a press statement and also said that 230 trucks are expected to make their way into Gaza today. The Israeli army said in a post on X that four fuel tankers and four tankers of cooking gas had been delivered to humanitarian organizations inside Gaza via the Rafah crossing.

The truce comes after 49 days of uninterrupted fighting between Israel and Hamas, resulting in more than 14,000 deaths in Gaza, including over 6,000 children, according to figures released by the Hamas-run government media office in Gaza. In Israel, around 1,200 people were killed and 240 were taken hostage when Hamas infiltrated southern Israel.
