［英詩］Bob Dylan, 'Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)'

英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのアルバム 'Self Portrait' (1970年、下) に収められた 'Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)' です(「マイティ・クィン」)。

本歌は 'The Basement Tapes' の1曲で、最初のスタジオ録音は1967年夏 (Big Pink, West Saugerties, New York)。このとき録られた2テークのうちのテーク2 ［テーク1との説も］がボックス・セット 'Biograph' (1985) に収められています。テーク1は 'The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete' (2014) に収められています。

'Self Portrait' に収められているのは Isle of Wight Festival (31 August 1969) でのライヴ録音。このライヴ録音は 'Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II' にも収められています。

本歌が書かれたのは1967年夏で、映画 'The Savage Innocents' (Nicholas Ray 監督、伊英仏、1960, 下 ［邦題「バレン」］) の影響があると言われています。

映画では Anthony Quinn がエスキモーの Inuk 役を演じました。ディランの歌でのヒーローは Quinn という名のエスキモーで、周りの人を幸せにする類い稀な能力を有しています。なお、映画で Inuk の妻 Asiak を演じたのは日本の谷 洋子でした。
