英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。ボブ・ディランのアルバム 'The Times They Are A-Changin'' (1964)に収められた曲です。英国のマーダー・バラッド 'Pretty Polly' を下敷きに、ディランが実話をもとに作ったといわれるブルーズ歌です。ディランの歌の中では最も暗い部類に属しますが、それだけに世界に与えたインパクトは強烈です。

すでにお知らせしましたが、先月から、とうぶんの間、Bob Dylan, '100 Songs' に載っている歌を取上げてゆきます。1か月に最低でも2篇、可能なら4篇ていど、取上げたいと思います。月の主配信は〈英詩の基礎知識〉〈歌われた英詩1〉〈歌われた英詩2〉の3部構成にする予定です。

これまでは一つの歌に 12,000-15,000 字を費やして論じてきましたが、今後は一つあたり 5,000 字見当(または多くても10,000字以内)で論じてみます。ディランの詩は複雑で深いので、これだけの字数で論じられるかは不明ですが、読む方の負担も考えつつ、なおかつディランの全体像がくっきり見えるような記述を目ざします。ご理解くだされば幸いです。

ボブ・ディランの 'Ballad of Hollis Brown' は英国の伝承歌の旋律を借りて米国の農民の窮状を鋭く描き出したブルーズ歌。物語の主人公に2人称で語りかける特異なスタイルで書かれており、そのことが聴き手に大きなインパクトを与える。

(詩テクストは Chrsitopher Ricks ら編の校訂版[2014, 下の写真]に準拠。流布版テクスト[3行連でなく6行連になっている]とはかなり違う。実際に唄われている歌詞に近い。なお、2-3連の間に上記とは違う歌詞(下記参照)が加わった1962年の録音がある。それが収められた 'The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 The Witmark Demos 1962-1964' には "This is, this is 'The Rise and Fall of Hollis Brown,' it's a true story."「これは、これは『ホリス・ブラウンの盛衰』で、実話だ。」の記述がある。このディランの「実話」'a true story' 発言は1963年4月[12日、ニューヨーク]の Town Hall でのライヴでのことだと Heylin は指摘している。)
