［英詩］Bob Dylan, 'Too Much of Nothing'

英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月3本目です。歌われる詩の2回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのアルバム 'The Basement Tapes' (1975年、下) に収められた 'Too Much of Nothing' です(「なにもないことが多すぎる」)。

録音は1967年夏 (Big Pink, West Saugerties, New York)。

モーターバイクの事故 (1966年7月29日) 後、ボブ・ディランは回復の時間をシェークスピアの『リア王』や聖書を読んで過ごしました。これらの書がディランの世界観を深く変えたとマルゴタンらは主張します。

ジョナサン・コットがディランに『リア王』の影響についてこう尋ねました。〈'The Basement Tapes' の歌のいくつかについて、『リア王』からの発想が関わっていると、いつも私は解釈してきました。例えば、'Too much of nothing / Can make a man abuse a king.' などです〉

すると、ディランはこう答えました。〈まさにその通り〉と。さらに、〈後年になると、それは 'king' から 'clown' に変わる〉と言いました。

［後掲のリクス版テクストによれば、コットの引用した行をディランは 'The Basement Tapes' で唄っていない。］

ところが、マルゴタンらによれば、'Too Much of Nothing' はこの二つの引喩だけではないと。歌のコーラスに出てくる二人の女性 Vivian と Valerie は、おそらく、T. S. エリオットの最初の妻 Vivienneと2番目の妻 Valerie のことだろうというのです。そして、ディランはエリオットを非難しているとマルゴタンらは主張します。はたして、どうなのでしょうか。

フォーク・トリオのピーター・ポール・アンド・メアリが1967年に 'Too Much of Nothing' をカヴァーしました (下)。その際に、Vivian を Marian に変えました。これでは歌が意味をなさなくなると、ディランの不興をかったと、マルゴタンらは指摘します。

こういう複雑な問題を含むためか、本歌は一度もライヴで演奏されていません。

引喩の問題をふくめ、リクス校訂版をもとに考えてみます。リクスのテクストは本歌の2種類を左右に併記していますが、ここでは左側の方、つまり、'The Basement Tapes' で唄われている通りのテクストを用います。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'Too Much of Nothing' は、シェークスピアの『リア王』の父娘のやりとりに由来する悲劇を思わせる。それだけでなく、T. S. エリオットのふたりの妻たちへの言及もあるといわれる。古今の文学を踏まえて人間に迫るディランの作品。
