編みもの事始め

少し前に何かで、編み物をはじめたきっかけは？ という質問を見て、
私の場合は何だったかな？ と考えていた。

あれは10年くらい前の春先のこと。
結婚してしばらくの間、私は沖縄に住んでいた。
その前の一年は、転勤→退職→結婚→新しい土地で新生活、と結構激動で、その流れに乗って泳いできた一年の疲れが出たのか、風邪から腎盂腎炎を併発してしまい、その時、1〜2週間ほど安静が必要という事態になっていた。
安静が必要だが、少しずつ治ってきて、ただ寝てばかりいるのも退屈が過ぎるなと思いはじめた頃。

病院から帰る途中、立ち寄った本屋でふと見つけた、毛糸2玉と8号棒針が付録でついていたシリーズの1冊め。(たしか、スワッチを編んで、最後につなげてブランケットにするというものだったと記憶しています。)

編み物は11才くらいの時に一度、母からガーター編みを習ったきり、私には向いてないと放置していた。
でも大人になった今ならどうかな？ と購入、家に帰ってスワッチを1枚編んでみたとき。

何これ、楽しい。

思えば、実家は小さな和菓子屋だったのだが、桜餅を桜の葉に包んだり、菱餅をラップでくるむという作業が、私はとても好きだった。
棒針2本で編み地ができていく楽しさは、何かその作業と通じるひとつひとつ完成していく喜びがあった。
ノリが良すぎるようだが、新しい才能が開花...? とまで思った。ちょうど熱が出たり点滴を受けた日々の後だったため、自分の中で何かがリセットされて、新しいものが入ってきたのかもしれない。

その後、スワッチ2枚目も数日のうちに編みあがり、2巻が出るのを楽しみにしつつ、時は移り3月。
金沢に引っ越すこととなった。

I saw something once that asked, "What made you start knitting?" I saw the question,
What was it in my case? I was thinking about it.

It was early spring, about 10 years ago.
I had been living in Okinawa for a while after getting married, and perhaps tired from the turbulent year of job transfer, retirement, marriage, and new life in a new place, I caught pyelonephritis from a cold and had to stay in bed for a week or two.
Although I needed to rest, I was getting better little by little, and I was beginning to think that just sleeping around was too tedious.

On the way home from the hospital, I stopped by a bookstore and found the first book in a De Agostini-like series that came with two balls of yarn and a JPN 8 DPNS.
(I remember it was about knitting swatches and connecting them at the end to make a blanket.)

Knitting..... I learned garter knitting from my mother when I was about 11 years old, and then left it behind because I wasn't cut out for it.
But now that I'm an adult, I thought, why not? I bought it and went home and knitted a swatch.

What fun!

Thinking back, my parents had a small Japanese sweets shop, and I loved the process of wrapping sakura mochi in sakura leaves and hishimochi in plastic wrap.
The joy of creating a knitted fabric with two needles was somehow similar to that work, the joy of completing one by one.
It may sound too easy, but I even thought I had a new talent.
It might have been because I had just come off a fever and had been on an intravenous drip, so something had been reset within me and something new had come in.

I finished the second swatch within a few days, and I was looking forward to the release of the second volume.

Time moves on and it is March.
We move to Kanazawa.
