英語で読むデザイン【16】インドの若者の間で流行る『本場のヨガ』

日本ではすでにヨガが定着をしており、ホットヨガなどの派生も導入されてきました。本場のインド、しかも若者の間ではどのようなヨガが開発・流行しているのでしょうか?インドでは、医師も健康のために定期的なヨガを推奨するその種類とパワーとは?

Over the years, the concept of Yoga has been revamped entirely. Gone is the age when sages practiced Yoga to attain self-actualisation and progress spiritually by isolating oneself and renouncing everyday comforts of life. Today, the practice of Yoga in India is still flourishing because of its many health benefits. Yoga offers a holistic approach to wellness and well-being, and in all its forms has carved its niche in the wellness industry, becoming especially sought after by the youth.

In Yoga, each posture holds an embedded significance to strengthen the body and balance the mind. With the advent of stress-relieving measures in popular culture, Yoga offers a pathway to lead a stress-free and happier life. One could be healthier and happier by spending just as little as a few minutes, within the comfort and convenience of one’s home, or in a quiet studio. This captured the interest of many people; especially the competitive youth of the country.

The subtler concepts of Yoga such as following a sattvik and organic diet (vihar) got recognised in addition to diversifying into various trends which recently became popular in India. Power yoga, Eco yoga, HIIT Yoga (High Intensity Interval Training), Aerial yoga, Hot Yoga are trendier form that are designed to suit the needs of the younger lot. The postures (asanas) are practiced vigorously while maintaining the rhythmic balance between actions, thoughts or feelings (bhavas) and breath to create a wholesome experience. Therefore, in its birthplace - India, not only has Yoga thrived, but its evolution into a fitness-wellness domain has enabled its strong foothold amongst the youth of the country.

Yoga is popularised amongst the youth by celebrity youth icons like Shilpa Shetty, Kareena Kapoor, Malaika Arora and Nargis Fakhri endorsing the benefits of Yoga as a fitness regime, exercises for weight loss, maintaining better mental health and imbibing a holistic mindfulness approach to life. Digital Yoga trending today through online videos, personal exercise guides, audio sessions, and even live streaming. With its widespread benefits easily visible, doctors recommend Yoga to be integrated into the regular routine of people to aid overall good health.
