英語日記015：ノートの取り方

おはようございます。

前回日記で書いたUoPeopleですが、実は教材は完全オープンソースなのでどなたでも無料で見ることができます。…というわけで私も入学を待たずに教材を読み始めることにしました。今日はその内容にヒントを得た日記です。

1 Note Taking Strategies

Yesterday, I downloaded a reading assignment from UoPeople's portal site. The title was "Note Taking Strategies." According to this document, there are three strategies to take notes;

1. Outline Strategy
In this strategy, I use different heading and subheading levels. After taking notes, I can easily review what I have learned. If I see only the first level of heading, there is the outline of a lecture.

According to the reading assignment, I can do in this way as the second round of notes-reorganize the note I scribbled in the first round.

2. Cornell Strategy
I have to separate my notebook into three parts-right, left, and bottom in this strategy. I usually use the right section to take notes and write a brief summary of it in the left section. I use the bottom section reconstructing the summary written in the left section.

3. Map Strategy
I use the same section of my notebook as Cornell Strategy, but I use a Mind Map when I am writing to show visual relationships between ideas. The left and bottom section is for the summary of the Mind Map.

I guess that all of these strategies are new for most Japanese. I was taught just to copy what's written on the blackboard in my childhood. If I could use these different strategies for different purposes since I was a child, my study would be more effective.

細かい指摘がたくさんありましたが、tautology や synonym に関するものが多かったです。tautologyは「頭痛が痛い」のような二重用法です。今回だとbrief summaryという語法が「簡単な要約」と言う訳になるわけですが、要約なんだから簡単に決まってるでしょ、ということですね。

コーネル式のノートでは左側にざっと要点を書き、その要点を下の段に再構成してまとめるという順序をとるので、brief summaryとあえて書くしかなかったと判断したのですが、さてどうなんでしょうね。

おわりに

習慣化には3週間かかるといわれていますが、2020年5月1日に始めた英語日記はちょいちょい休みを挟みながらも無事3週間のサイクルを終えました。

今後はUoPeopleから提供される教材をインプットしなければならなくなり、その分時間をとるのが大変になる反面、日記のネタは豊富になっていくのかな。

学習で書いたエッセイなども日記として転用していけたらと思います。
