英語日記007：速さ・時間・距離（算数の問題）

日記が億劫と言うわけではなく、ネタが本格的に尽き始めているのと、たまには気分を変えたいな～、と思ってこんなことをやってみます。

1 Speed, Time and Distance

Mary and John were to meet at the station at 10 a.m., but John missed his train. So Mary started walking alone at 40m per minute to the park, which is 1000m away from the station. After John arrived at the station, he ran at 150m per minute. After John caught up, they walked at 50m per minute together. It was 10:23 a.m. when we arrived at the park.

Question.
What time and minute did John arrive at the station?

Answer.
Mary walked for 23minutes, at 40m/m at first and at 50m/m after John's catching up. She totally walked 1000 meters. From these, two equations can be set up.

x + y =23
40x + 50y =1000

The combination of x and y will be x=15, y=8.

Mary walked at 40m/m for 15 minutes, that makes 15*40=600 meters. This distance is equal to that John ran at 150m/m. He ran 600 meters at this speed, so the time it took was 600/150=4 minutes.

The difference between 4 and 15 is 11. 

So the Answer is 10:11 a.m.

総合スコア　98点

ほぼ知っている単語と言い回しだけ使ったので好スコアでしたが、一点だけ指摘がありました。Answer第1段落のtotallyはなくても良いんじゃないか？という指摘です。

4 感想

あまりにネタがなかったので、こないだ学習塾で子どもに教えた速度・時間・距離の計算の問題を、自分で（英語で）作って（英語で）解くことにしました。

海外の子にとってはこのレベルの言い回しが日常なわけですが、日本人が考えるとなかなか難しいものです。特に英語は「主語は何？」ということがとても大事なので、文の組み立ては非常に苦労しました。

英語で算数って意外と面白い気がするので、これからもネタが切れたらやることにしようかな(笑)
