転落

GENESIS 3

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.
さて、神が作った野の獣の中で蛇がいちばんずる賢かった

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
蛇は女に言った「神はほんとに、庭の木から食べちゃ駄目って言ったの？」

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
女は蛇に言った「食べていいけど、庭の真ん中の木のは食べちゃ駄目だって、死にたくないなら触っても駄目だって」

But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
しかし蛇は女に言った「ぜんぜん死なないよ、もし食べたら目があいて、善悪を知って神のようになっちゃうのを知ってるからなんだよ」

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate,
そこで女はその木が、美味しそうだし見てても魅力的で、賢くなれそうだと分かったので、その実を取って食べた

and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
そして連れ合いの夫にくれてやり、アダムも食べた。ふたりとも目がひらき、自分たちが裸であることに気づいた。そしてイチジクの葉を縫い合わせて、腰巻とした

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
涼しくなってから、神が庭を歩いているのが聞こえた。ふたりは神に見つからないように木々の間に隠れた

But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
神はアダムを呼んで言った「どこだい？」、アダムは言った「あなたが庭にいる音がして、自分が裸なのが気になって隠れました」

He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”
神は言った「誰がお前を裸だと言ったんだい？ 食べちゃ駄目と言った木の実を食べたのかい？」、アダムは言った「あなたがくれた連れ合いの女が、実をくれたので食べました」

Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
神は女に言った「何てことをしてくれたんだ」、女は言った「蛇に騙されて食べました」

直訳には間違いないが、フランクに訳す楽しみを見つけたところ
特に会話はそのほうがいいかなと
物語として少し面白くなってきた
いろんな感想を引き出すことができる
男はいつも間抜けで、すぐ女に巻き込まれてしまうとか
女が堕落の象徴とされてしまったとか
女はいつも人のせいにするとか
蛇の目的はいったい何だったのか
単なる世間話じゃないのかとか
ずる賢いとか、かわいそうじゃないか、何も蛇に得はないのにとか
どう見ても神が確信犯だとか
ただやっぱり聖書の最初の最初に、ここまではっきりと男尊女卑的なことが
書かれてあるのは、その後に相当大きな影響を与えた可能性はある
