”It better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied.” - John Stuart Mill

「満足した豚より、不満足なソクラテスであれ」、功利主義で有名なジョンスチュワート・ミルのあまりにも有名な一文である。

この一文には、計り知れないほどの教訓が詰まっている。

自分の理想、価値観をどこに置くか。
これで自らの人生のバリューが確定すると個人的には思う。

人間は自分に甘く、容易に満足する生き物である。

特にKyoto Cjillのメンバーが属する東大や医学部では、より感じる人が多いと思う。
医師、官僚、外コンや外銀に内定が当たり前。周りもみんなそう。
世間では誰からも羨まれ、賞賛の嵐。
満足する気持ちはわかる。

ただ、そこで満足していていいのか。
その立場に立っても、低俗的な欲に満足することなく、不満足であり続けたらどうだろうか。
はるか高いところの景色が待っているのではないだろうか。

自分はそこまで必ずやれる、そんな誇りと自信を持つ者を世間はナルシストと呼ぶ。
ただ、周りからなんと言われようと、自分は周りと違うと常に信じ続ける。
自分は優秀であるという、正当な矜持を持ち、不満足であり続けよう。
我々Kyoto Chillは、そんなメンバーを喜んで応援したいと思う。

昨今の労働時間問題は、リモートの普及も相まって、かなり改善され、喜ばしいばかりである。
労働時間や職場でのストレスの減少。素晴らしい。
ただ、それと同時にストレス耐性や仕事、学業へのマインドセットがかなりゆるくなってはいないだろうか。
こんな時代だからこそ、自分の現状に満足せず、厳しい目標を自らに課し、負荷をかけていけるかどうか。これは数十年というスパンで見た時にかなりの差となって現れるのではないだろうか。

他方で、人生において常に不満足であり続けることで、人生の目的でもある「幸せである」状態から乖離するのではないか、とも考えられる。

畢竟、これらの損益分岐点を見つけ、実践することが人生の目標となるのだろう。
ただ、私の場合、少なくとも現状は、今の自分に満足することなく、常に高い理想をもち、謙虚に目線を高く保ち続けるよう努力していくことが、10年後の自分の幸せにつながると信じている。

冒頭のミルの言葉を胸に。

This sentence contains an enormous amount of wisdoms.

Where do you set your ideals and values?
Personally, I think this will determine the value of your life.

People are easily satisfied with themselves.

This is especially true at the University of Tokyo and medical schools, where Kyoto Cjill members belong.
It is no surprise to get job offers as doctors, bureaucrats, foreign consultants, and foreign banks. 
They are envied and praised by everyone in the world.
I can understand why they feel satisfied.

But is it enough to be satisfied with that?
Even if we stand in that position, what if we continue to be unsatisfied without being satisfied with our vulgar desires?
Isn't there a much higher view waiting for us?

The world calls those who have such pride and confidence that they can surely make it that far narcissists.
No matter what others say, they always believe that they are different from others.
Be justifiably proud that you are good, and continue to be unsatisfied.
Kyoto Chill would be happy to support such members.

I'm glad to see that the issue of working hours has improved considerably in recent years.
Less working hours and less stress in the workplace. That's great.
However, at the same time, I wonder if our stress tolerance and our mindset towards work and study has become quite loose.
It is precisely in times like these that we must not be satisfied with our current situation, but rather, we must be able to put more pressure on ourselves.Even if we stand in that position, what if we continue to be unsatisfied without being satisfied with our vulgar desires?
Isn't there a mightier view waiting for us?

The world calls those who have such pride and confidence that they can surely make it that far narcissists.

It is precisely in times like these that we must not be satisfied with our current situation, but rather, we must be able to set tough goals for ourselves and put more pressure on ourselves. In the span of a few decades, this will make a significant difference.

On the other hand, if we are always unsatisfied in life, we may deviate from the purpose of life, which is to be happy.

After all, finding and practicing these break-even points would be the goal of life.
However, in my case, at least for the present, I believe that I will be happy 10 years from now if I am not satisfied with my current situation, but always strive to have high ideals and keep my eyes high.

With Mill's words at the beginning of this article in mind.
