Please follow this magazine to see these SDGs posts.

The background of education issues before the launch of SDGs was aimed at reducing the number of children which could not receive compulsory education and would be forced to engage in low-wage labor by engaging in child labor mainly in emerging countries. However, the SDGs also addressed issues in developed countries, and the scope of education issues expanded.

When we talk about education, I was wondering if many people think of compulsory education and/or 16 years from elementary school to university. After starting working for companies or organisations, we spend less time to study, but we are trained to contribute to them. From this point of view, many Japanese companies disclose information in connection with this Goal and  training their employees. But I would like to introduce you to different and distinctive examples.

Toyo Suisan Kaisha is a company that manufactures instant noodles and processed foods that are famous for their "Maru-chan" brand. In general, Japanese food manufacturers often provide education opportunities in schools and short tours in their factories. The company's program has its own characteristics.

Shimaya, its subsidiary, offers hands-on learning about miso (Japanese bean paste) making. Children prepare pots for miso including crushing boiled soybean with the company's employee and later receive miso. Education opportunities in schools and short tours in their factories can cover different content from regular classes such as math. So we often remember them immediately after that, but it can be tough to remember after we grow up. The company apply this active learning program, because it aims not only to nurture food but also to pass on the next generation of miso culture. I appreciate this educational opportunities that meet the needs of the local community.

Unicharm is passionate about educating the elderly. The company is famous for diapers and sanitary products for infants. In recent years it is expanding product portfolio of its diaper and pet business for the elderly. It takes place urine leakage care and excretion care seminars in connection with diapers for the elderly. In the seminars it provide training to prevent urine leakage mechanisms and diseases, practical content to problems that are easy to hold on to alone.

It is also developing a pet business to improve quality of life and quality of life for the elderly. It is especially working on the issue of nursing care associated with the aging of pets. Pets, like humans, may have urine leaks or bedridden when they get older. It focus on awareness raising activities for animal hospital staff regarding the care of elderly pets.
