apply…【原義】〜へ(ap) 接触する・くっつく(ply)

① [apply (to A)(for B)]「AにBを申し込む・求める」
② [apply (to A)]「(Sは) Aに適用される・該当する」
③ [apply O (to A)]「OをAに適用する・つける（塗る）」
④ [apply toV]「～することを申し出る」

※①②は自動詞、③④は他動詞としての用法。

※①の場合、Aにはthe company（企業・会社）などの組織が来ることが多いが、省略されることもよくある。

Bにはa job（仕事）/ a position（地位）などの仕事関係の語や、admission（許可）/ a permit（許可）/ a visa（ビザ）などの許可系の語、a loan（貸付）/ a credit card（クレジットカード）などの審査が必要なものが多い。

　➤ I applied to the IT company for a job.
　➤ You can apply for an entry visa.
　➤ I'm going to apply for the credit card.

また、online（オンラインで）/ in person（対面で）/ by letter（書面で）など、申し込み方法に関する副詞（句）が付くこともある。

　➤ You are supposed to apply for the bank loan
      in person.

※②の場合、Sにはthe rules（ルール）/ the principles（原則）/ the law（法・法則）/ the restrictions（制限）など規範関係の語や、fees（料金）/ charges（料金）/ discount（割引）など支払いに関する語がくることが多い。

　➤ This rules apply to everyone.
　➤If your return is not the result of our error,
     a return postage fee will apply.

また、only（～にだけ）/ equally（等しく）/ successfully（うまく）などの副詞（句）が付くこともある。

　➤ The law applies only to Japanese citizens.

※③の場合、Oには上記②のSと同様の語がきやすい。また、受動態で使われることも多い。

その他、sunscreen（日焼け止め）/ the glue（接着剤）など、主に液状のものを物理的に「塗る・塗り広げる」という意味で使うことも。

　➤ Please apply the glue evenly to both
      surfaces.

※④の場合も、「～で仕事をする」「～に参加する」など審査が必要なことを申し込む・申し出るという文脈が多い。

　➤ He has applied to join our association.
