強風に耐える菜園づくり

私たちの住むミシシッピに、ハリケーンの季節がやってきました。

いまのところ大きなハリケーンは来ていませんが、急に土砂降りになる日が週に１回くらいはあります。庭の植物たちにとって、雨はありがたいものですが、問題は風です。

海に面した家の庭は防風林などで守られていないので、海からの強風をまともに受けてしまいます。去年は庭の海に近い場所に背の高いひまわりを植えてしまい、花が咲き始めるところで、ぽきっと折れてしまいました。

というわけで、去年の反省をもとに、今年は春の種まきの前に入念に計画を立て、風の強い場所には根菜を植えることにしました。

ところがある日、また夫が去年のように、風の強い日に慌てて支柱を立てに走っているのがキッチンの窓から見えました。

戻ってくると夫はまるで重大な発見の様に早口で話し始めました。

夫 : あそこは本当に丈の高い物はだめなんだよ！本当に低い物じゃない と…。

私：うん、うん、そうだね....あれ、待てよ、同じ会話をして計画をたてなかったけ？

夫：空いてるスペースがあったから、魔が差して、スプーントマト植えちゃった…。

よりによって、よわよわしい茎のスプーントマト。計画どおりにしなかったら意味ないじゃん！と思いましたが、料理中やパソコンでタイプ中に英語でバーッと話されると聞いてはいても深くまで考えが回らないので、、うんうんいいよ、といってしまった私も悪いので反省です。

でも夫ががんばって、風に負けないようにしっかりと支柱とをたて麻糸で結んだので、かわいい小さな小さなトマトがたくさん実りました！

Magnolia Bend

The hurricane season has arrived here in Mississippi. We haven’t had a big hurricane so far, but we have had heavy rain that appears suddenly about once a week. The plants in our garden appreciate that, but the problem is the wind.
Our yard faces the water, and it isn’t protected by a windbreak. So the strong wind blows across the bay directly onto us. Last year, we planted a tall sunflower near the ocean, but the wind broke it just when it started to flower.

My husband was sad…

but the fallen sunflower bloomed inside.

So this year, we remembered that and carefully designed the garden’s layout before planting the seeds in the spring. We decided to plant low-growing root vegetables in the windy area.

One day, however, I looked out the window and saw my husband running out to stake a plant.　When he returned, he was talking fast as if he discovered something important.

Husband: You know, that place isn’t good for tall plants! We should plant low-growing plants out there.

Me: Yeah, that’s true. Wait…didn’t we have this same conversation when we made the plan?

Husband: Well there was an empty space, so I just planted the spoon tomatoes there…

Of all things, he planted the spoon tomatoes with the weak stems there! “If you don’t follow the plan, there’s no point to make one!” I criticized him, but it was partly my fault. Because when he asked me about it, I said “Okay” without paying enough attention to the conversation (I was probably distracted, cooking or doing something on the computer).

But my husband did his best, using supports and jute twine to secure the plants against the wind, and we eventually got a bunch of these tiny cute tomatoes!
