Common questions I get

why are you here in Singapore?

Short answer, because this is a second home to me. Then the question follows, “why do you consider Singapore as your second home?” I grew up in Singapore as a child and for the first 10 years of my life I didn’t question the fact why our family was in Singapore. When I was informed by my parents that we are going back to Japan for good, I couldn’t grasp the idea at first. I still remember that the view from airplane window was blurred due to tears that was unstoppable as we took off from Changi airport.

was it difficult to make career shift?

I continued to study at graduate school and this gave impression to others that I will continue to do research for life. So when I shared that I decided to join Leave a Nest, a company, some asked the question. “why are you making a career shift?” That puzzled me. I myself wasn’t thinking like that when I decided to join the company. However typically if you continue your study to post graduate schools, usual choice would be to continue on with academic career.

What I believe in

The very reason I get asked about why I didn’t continue may be part of the reason I wanted to go out of comfortable University environment. I want to see if researchers can contribute to society in other means than publication. I do realize that the Publication is not the only way researchers can contribute to society yet it is the easiest to imagine. I want to realize a world where and if researchers wish to go out of University after obtaining PhD. I believe many of the soft skills we obtain can be applied in various situations.
