Aaronさんとの会話のScript英語バージョン/ Go!Go!Mogeru Books episode 9 Script (English ver.)

<Intro>

Mogeru(hereinafter referred to as M)
 :Hi,there. I’m Kiriyama Mogeru.
This is the Podcast Program “Kiriyama Mogeru’s Go! Go! Mogeru Books”episode 9.
This is my first challenge to talk in English in Podcast.
Please don't worry too much about my mistakes.
And, today I have a wonderful special guest.
Please welcome, Mr. Aaron Joseph Seward.
Aaron(hereinafter referred to as A)
 :Hello.
M:Hello.How are you today?
A:Yeah,very good. How are you?
M:Ah,never better.
A:OK
M:Good.
Please, let me introduce him.
He is my friend.
He is from UK.
He knows much about music.
And, he is a great painter.
Actually, I have the poster he painted,”Stop Making sense1)”poster.
A:Ah,yeah.
M:Yeah, Talking Heads Movie.
A:Talkng Heads,yeah.
M:It’s very nice. I love this poster. I have the poster in my bedroom wall.
A:Yaeh.
M:And, opposite side wall is “Shibata Satoko” poster.
A:Of course.
M:Hahaha.
So, today I have some questions for Aaron about Shibata Satoko.
Please let me explain a little bit about Shibata Satoko.
Shibata Satoko is a great Japanese singer-song-writer.
I think she is a genius. I like her songs, I like her lyrics. And I like the way she sings, I like the way she talks.
In other words, I’m obsessed by Shibata Satoko.
A: Mmm……
M: I would like to talk with many people about Shibata Satoko. And I also would like to know what they think about Shibata Satoko.
So, I have about five questions for Aaron about Shibata Satoko.
A:OK.
M:Are you ready?
A:Yes,let’s go.
M:Good.Let's get started.

Q1. Which song do you like the best in Shibata Satoko Works?

A:Mmm…,I think my favorite album is the second album.
M:Ah,second album! “Ijiwaru-Zenshu”, right?
A:OK. Yeah.
When I first came to Japan, we were driving around a lot in my wife’s mothers car and we listened to this record all the time. I really love it.
Especially I think the very last song, that’s one of my favorites.
M:The last song…
A:Maybe number 16.
M:”Sutoreito na ito”
A:Yeah,yeah.
M:”Sutoreito sutoreito sutoreito na ito”(singing)
A:Yeah. I think so.
One of them has a really good guitar like a really good sound.
M:Yeah. She is very good guitarist, and good singer.
In Japanese word “hikikatari”, do you say in English “hikikatari”?
A:I don’t know.
M:“Sings with a guitar only.”
A;Yeah, like a "Mountain Goats 2)" . A bit like a Mountain Goats.
M:Mountain Go…?
A:Yeah, maybe this record reminded me a bit of the early Mountain Goats’ type of recording.
M:Early Mountain…?
A:Do you know the band the “Mountain Goats”?
M:Mountain Goats! Sorry I don’t know.
A:Oh, very nice band from America. But, their…, early record is all just he’s singing and playing into the microphone, now they are full band.
M:Ah,yeah yeah, Shibata Satoko style?
A:Yeah.I really like this sound.
And I also like the song “Senpai”
M:Ah,”Yubeshi Senpai”!
A:Yeah,”puchi puchi”…Nice song.
M: Nice song. It’s very cute, and strange lyrics.
A:Yeah.”puchi puchi”.
M:”Puchi puchi”…? ”puni puni”kana?(“puni puni” isn’t it?).
A:”Puni puni”.
M:I’m glad to hear that.

Q2.Have you ever read Shibata Satoko’s lyrics in English?

A:Well, only a little bit on the Internet translation lyrics thing.
M: Do you remember which song?
A:I think the “Senpai”, that one. Because I listened to this so much.I kind of I wanted to know what is it about.
But even after I read the Google translation, I was not very clear what it is about sometimes.
M:I know.
Many Japanese listeners don’t get her lyrics, too(either).
I think the reason why Shibata Satoko’s lyrics is unique and interesting and difficult to understand is many listeners often misunderstand the word she expresses.
She uses very simple words. Everyone can understand the word she uses.
But , combinations of words she uses is(are) unusual.
So,it is not understood immediately. But, if you read carefully you will understand what she says.
A:Ah,do you have a favorite lyrics?
M:Ah, many many songs I like..
  The best is…,“Lucky Color”
A:”Lucky Color”
M:”Lucky color wa kiiro to orenji (Locky color are yellow and orange)”
Very very strange lyrics but attractive..,but,… ah, what should I say in English…
“sugoi sozoryoku ga hirakeru toiuka…(like my imagination runs wild…)
Kano (hereinafter referred to as K)
 :Lyrics remind me imagination…
M:Ah, imagination!
A:You could say “evocative”.
M:Evocative?
A:I find the lyrics like you hear it and it gives you lots of ideas emotions. It’s kind of “evocative”. You know, you’re just saying a few words, but you if people’s good lyrics writer they can get lots of ideas in small space like poetry.
M:Poetry word “evocative” , I see.
A:But also ,sometimes it’s nice like her record especially this second album and some of the "Tenniscoats 3)"records.
I kind of, I decided I don’t want to find out the real lyrics because the song is so nice and if I… some songs I like in English but I don’t really like the lyrics so they are less, you know.
So if I one day I found out the Tenniscoats were singing about like I don’t know. About cleaning or something then I suddenly,”Oh…!”
Because now anything is possible because I don’t understand the lyrics.
M:Mmm…,the feelings of Tenniscoats is very similar to Shibata Satoko.
A:Yeah,they sometimes perform together?
M:Yeah, yeah, collaboration of them.
A:I think I have the record I meant ,a 7inch.
M:7inch…,”Korin 4)da (It’s Korin)”・
A:Like a brown and black.
M:Yeah.
A: its Ueno,and…
M:Yeah,”Ueno-san to Shibata-san(Mr. Ueno and Ms.Shibata)”

Q3.
If Shibata Satoko works in the UK or in Europe, do you think Shibata Satoko will become a major artist ?

A:Yeah, I think so. I mean she has such a good sound .
M:I’m glad to hear that.
A:I think she should do it. I can’t believe she’s never played in Europe…
M:Oh,probably she never played in Europe and in UK.
A:I think people really like all over Europe. She should go.
How about America?
M:America?Mmm…I don’t know…probably she never played in overseas.
A:Oh,Korea?
M:Ah,Korea!Yeah! In Korea, I think she used to play .
A:Yeah, I think she’d be really popular.
M:I remember that you said before Shbata-san’s stage and…
A:Oh, That’s lyrics!
M:Lyrics! Yeah,yeah.
A:That would be really good. I always think you know, nice to for all artists to have a way to have like a live subtitles for their lyrics. Somehow like a either a book or on the stage..
M:Yeah,yeah.
A:There is a musician I really like called "Jeffrey Lewis 5)".
M:Jeffrey…
A:Jeffrey Lewis. His songs are really lyric-focussed, I think. The music is really…he’s really talented musician but definitely the lyrics is the central thing.
M:Ah,huh.
A: So he’ll be really good if he came to Japan or something if he could have the live translation or the other way. Because I think without the lyrics it would not really… it wouldn’t work in the same way anyway. Sometimes he does this kind of live comic book things like his singing and showing you the pictures the same time.

Q4.
This is not a Question, but I would like to hear again.
I like the story you told me before. Music Video of "Ka-pu fan no ko(Carp fan’s girl)" .

M:Do you remember?
A:Yeah, of course. I think about it all the time, even when I’m not listening to that song.
Which album is this song ?
M:First album,”Shibata Satoko jima”(showing the album jacket).
A:OK. Must be our friend gave us CD copy.
We were listening to a lot of time.
Early song our son learned. He wanted to hear it as soon as it finishes,”Mokkai ,mokkai!(One more time, one more time!)” He’s letting know the lyrics.
So my for some reason I had a imaginary music video which is the like an English-pub and it’s very busy after a kind of football match or rugby match or something, a lot of guys inside. It’s like afternoon time and everybody’s kind of talking “just tired”. And then, someone puts on the “Ka-pu fan no ko” on a jukebox. And as soon as it starts ,everybody is like “Oh,, this song..” like they really know it. They’ve been listening to it for a long time. And as the song is playing, more and more people are kind of singing along,
M:Wow.
“Ka-pu fan no anoko wa kawaii ne“, dang dang !(singing)
A:Yeah but like a kind of a football champ way,
“kawaii ne! Wei!(singing)”
M:Hahaha,so interesting.
A: Really aggressive English energy , and people’s getting too excited kind of throwing things around for fun.
M:Wow.
A:That’s very clear in my head. I don’t know why. I used to work in pubs square a lot.
I can’t see it.
M:I want to see it.
A:I know.
M:Shall we make it?
A: I don’t know how!, Yeah, that would be good.
We need a English pub. But, maybe I could. There must be a way to make it happen, yeah.
I think about it, how to do it.
M: That’s so interesting to me, thank you. I wanted to hear again.
A: Maybe a little bit inspired, there’s one video of her performing this song 6). Maybe in a wrestling ring.
M:Yeah.yeah, wrestling ring.
A:With like stomping.
K:It’s very kind of her earliest performance.
A&M:Yeah, yeah.
M:This video is on YouTube , still on YouTube, maybe.

Q5.
Which musician or band do you like except Shibata Satoko?

A:Oh, I really like “Boards of Canada 7)” , very interested in. Or ”Mountain Goats”, especially the kind of first half of the ”Mountain Goats” discography.Or, “Maher Shalal Hash Baz 8)”.
M:” Maher Shalal Hash Baz”!
A:Yes,”To-ri Kudo”is the kind of main musician and lots of people joining the band.
M:Tenniscourts used to join this band?
A:Oh. I don’t think any more.
And I really like “Movietone 9)”.
M:Movietone?
A: “Movietone” , the band from Bristol.
Or “The Pastels 10)”.
M:The Pastels! Glassgow?
A:Yeah.
M:Ah,I see.
A:I think if Shibata Satoko could perform in that kind of a with the Pastels or that part of the music scene, I think. She would have a really good reception.
M: She should go…
A:Glassgow.
M:Yeah, I think so, too.
And, how about "Bob Dylan 11)"?
A:Yeah, I love Bob Dylan.
M:Yeah, I heard before. Which album do you like the best?
A: I really like, when I was young I really liked the first few albums. His very earliest albums we had on the CD in my house. Like “Subterranean homesick blues” or “Highway”
M:Yeah,yeah.”Highway”.
A:But, his newest album “Rough and Rowdy Ways” ,it’s so good. I think I can’t believe how good it is. Kind of every few weeks I listen to it again. It’s really incredible record.
M:I want to hear it.
A:Yeah, I’m very jealous my sister is gonna go and watch Bob Dylan‘s concert next month.
M:Oh.
A:Lucky…
M:The feelings of your favorite musicians is(are) similar to Shibata Satoko, I think. The song with a guitar.
A:Yeah.

Q6.
What does “The Edge Of Summer 12)”mean?

A: Oh, so you asked me before and I thought it meant spring time like early summer.
“The edge of summer” is kind of going into it. But then I listened to the song and it sounds quiet. Now I think it sounds like the other side of summer. Looking back to summer.
M:Looking back to summer?
A:Yeah just my feeling from hearing.
M:Nearly Autumn?
A:Yeah.
M:Oh,I see.

<Outro>

M:Thank you for talking with me today!
A:Oh, no. Thank you.
M:Thank you so much. I had a great time, and I got a lot of hints for my research on Shibata Satoko.
A:OK.
Let’s make a video somehow, oneday!
M:Yeah! “Ka-pu fan no ko”in English pub!
A:I don’t know how…
M:So, that’s it. Thank you .
A:Thank you.
