最近話題になったニュースから英語を学ぶ(4)

英語の厄介なところは、頗る簡単そうに見える単語でも複数の意味があったり、辞書だけでは単語が使われる範囲がつかめない場合があることです。例えばlife一つとっても、生命、人生、生活、活力、生き物、実物など実に多くの意味があり、しかも二重の意味にかけている場合もあるので、日本語に訳した瞬間にその二重の意味が反映されません。例えばBlack Lives Matter(BLM)運動という黒人に対する暴力や組織的な人種差別の撤廃を訴える運動がありますが、このlivesのlifeには、黒人の＜命＞という意味もあれば＜生活＞や＜人生＞の意味も含まれています。英語ではlifeという単語でそれをすべて表すことができます。こういう場合日本語に訳さないで、そのままBLM運動というのがベストですね。

lightにも名詞、形容詞、動詞としていろいろな意味がありますが、次の例文では＜中身が薄い＞という意味です。

＜政策の中身が薄い大統領選が突然急展開を見せた＞というのです。<light>はもちろん＜軽い＞イメージですが、中身の薄さを言うときも使えます。こういうふうに実際に書かれた英文から語感を養うのがベストです。辞書はその原点になりますが、それだけでは実際に書いたり、話したりするときにアクティブ語彙として瞬間的に浮かべるのは難しいです。日本語でもそうですが、アクティブ語彙の多い人はとにかくたくさん読んでいますね。辞書を読むのが好きな人もいますが、それだけでネイティブと同じレベルの語感を養うのは不可能です。

では、今回最も取り上げたい単語を挙げます。それは”define”です。

define

バイデンが大統領選から撤退し、カマラ・ハリスにバトンが渡されましたが、彼女は大方の予想に反して副大統領としてミネソタ州の州知事ティム・ウォルズを選びました。しかし、ウォルズと聞いてもアメリカ人のほとんどの人は知りません。ハリスでさえ、どういう人物がまだはっきりしないのに、それ以上に誰も知らないウォルズが選ばれたことについて、政治の専門家でさえも意表を突かれました。

<define>は＜定義する＞とか＜明確にする＞という意味ですが、これを人間に使うと＜人物像を明確にする＞という意味になります。最近、ハリスに関してよく使われており、副大統領候補のウォルズに関しても使われています。

The Economistの8月15日号では、”Kamala Harris must define herself before Donald Trump does it for her”というタイトルの記事が出ています。

つい最近私は、『第三次世界大戦をいかに止めるか 台湾有事のリスクと日本が果たすべき役割』を7月末に上梓したビル・エモット氏にインタビューしましたが、カマラ・ハリスには未知数の部分が多い、つまりどういう人物像かまだ明確ではない、と言うときにdefineを使いました。トランプはどういう人物かみんな知っているという意味で、エモット氏はDonald Trump is completely defined in the minds of the American voter.と言っています。

以下インタビューの一部です。Qは私でAはビル・エモット氏です。

Q: Although we are seeing a close call between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, people are talking about “if Trump wins”. A lot of people argue that Kamala Harris has not been defined yet.
A: Well, she’s been a candidate for about eight days, so it’s not surprising that she’s not defined. But I think that in this election it’s probably a good thing that she’s not defined because it means she’s got a lot of room to fill the imaginations of people. In usual presidential elections in the U.S. the candidates are not that well defined because they’re probably a former governor of Arkansas, or they’re a former senator from Illinois, like Obama, and therefore they can appeal to the imagination of people.
Donald Trump is completely defined in the minds of the American voter. He was President for four years, he’s been around. Everyone knows everything they ever want to know about Donald Trump. There’s nothing new to learn about Donald Trump. Kamala Harris has an advantage, which is that people can imagine things about her. That can be positive and negative. But I think given her youth, the addition of the fact that she can learn on the job, she can recreate things, she can do new things, that’s probably, on balance, an advantage.

The upshot is a race to define Ms Harris. Unfortunately for the Democrats, Mr Trump has plenty of damning material to work with. As a former attorney-general of California, she is linked to the homelessness, drugs and crime of cities such as San Francisco. A west coast centrist is not a centrist in the battleground states she must win. She had a disastrous run in the presidential primaries last time round, dropping out early, having taken leftish positions on subsidising rent and banning fracking. As Mr Biden’s vice-president, she is lumbered with his record on inflation, immigration and (in Republican eyes) crime.

ハリスの弱点
 
今指摘されているハリスの弱点は２つですが、どちらも大統領職の視点からみると、最も重要な２つの要素です。

1.      Ms Harris struggles as an extemporaneous speaker, one of the core competencies of political life. Even math teachers might understand why she is mocked for her enthusiastic riffs about Venn diagrams.
(政治活動の基本的能力の一つであるぶっつけ本番の話術に欠ける。ベン図について同じ話を熱心に繰り返すハリス氏は物笑いの種にされている。数学の教師でさえ、あれでは笑われて当然と思っていることだろう。)

extemporaneousの簡単な単語はimpromptu（即興の）ですが、Economistでは難しい方のextemporaneousを使っています。こういうふうに日本人からみると一見難しそうにみえる単語をネイティブは頻繁に使います。それを見倣うとネイティブの英語に近づきます。

2008年に亡くなったWilliam F. Buckley Jr.という、アメリカ人なら知らない人はいないほど著名なコメンテーター、作家がいましたが、彼は話すときでも最も難しい単語や表現を使うことで有名でした。私もニューヨーク在住時代彼の”Firing Line”というインタビュー番組を見て、語彙を増やしていました。どれだけ語彙を増やしてもマイナスになることはありません。特に私がインタビューする相手は知性の固まりのような人が多いので、相手も容赦なく難しい単語や表現を使うからです。毎回こちらの知性や語彙力を試されているような感じです。その中でも作家のトマス・ピンチョン氏はダントツに語彙が多いです。ピンチョンも私に対して容赦なく難しい単語を使っておりました。私がわからない顔をすると、すぐに丁寧に単語の意味を説明してくれました。

ハリスに話を戻しましょう。
ハリスは集会でも常にプロンプターに出ている文字を読んでいます。要するにカンニングしながら話しているということです。また、メディアのインタビューにも一切応じていません。8月13日付Wall Street Journalの”Kamala Harris’s Avoidant Campaign”という記事の中でHolman Jenkins, Jr記者が、トランプはぶっつけ本番の言葉で記者会見をしているのに、ハリスはメディアのインタビューから逃げている、記者会見を一切しないことを痛烈に批判しています。トランプもハリスは＜頭が悪いから＞ぶっつけ本番の記者会見から逃げていると痛烈に批判しています。ボロが出ないように11月5日まで逃げようとしているというのです。Jenkins氏は”Ms Harris, with her low-profile career and now avoidant campaign, is forcing these voters to vote in the dark.”と皮肉たっぷりに書いております。

2.      カリスマ性に欠ける。
ハリスがカリスマ性に欠けていることについて、反論する人はまずいませんね。

ハリスについてメディアに指摘されていること

1.      She has not been battle-tested.

＜歴戦の、戦闘の試練に耐えた＞というのが元の意味ですが、ここでは比喩的に使われています。要するに＜予備選で全く戦っていない＞という意味です。もしバイデンが３月か４月に大統領選から撤退していれば、ハリスは予備選で他の民主党候補者と闘わなければなりませんでした。彼女は2020年の大統領選で、2019年に立候補して予備選が始まる前に脱落していますね。つまり今まで一回も予備選を経験したことがないのです。だからもし今回予備選で他の民主党候補者と戦っていれば、脱落していた可能性が頗る高かっただろうと言われています。

２．Within months of taking office, President Joe Biden was forced to confront a public perception that Harris didn’t measure up.
　
＜バイデンは、就任から数カ月も経たないうちに、ハリスはmeasure upしていないという世間の評価に直面せざるを得なくなった。＞という意味ですが、このmeasure upは<to have necessary or fitting qualifications>という意味で、この場合＜副大統領職の基準に達する能力がない＞という意味です。7月28日読売テレビ『そこまで言って委員会NP』に出演したとき、バイデンが大統領選からの撤退の決断を遅らせた理由を説明しました。まさにバイデンがハリスは副大統領職の能力もないのに、大統領職は無理である、と思っていたからであると説明しました。これは政権内部からの情報です。
　先述したように、ハリスには国のリーダーに求められる最も必要とされる２つの要素が欠けています。また、これはヒラリー・クリントンのときも指摘されましたが、ハリスは本当に自分の力で副大統領になったわけではなく、バイデンが大統領になったから副大統領になったのです。今回の大統領立候補も予備選を経ずになったので、実力でなったわけではありません。ヒラリーの場合自分の地位がどんどん上がって行ったのは夫のビル・クリントンの妻として、夫の地位に並行して上がって行ったわけで決して実力ではなかったとよく指摘されていました。それを自分の実力があると勘違いするといずれボロが出ます。最終的にヒラリーは大統領選で敗戦することで、その野心が打ち砕かれました。

冠詞の話

日本人が英語を学ぶときに厄介な冠詞の話をしましょう。
ここでは日本の英文法の参考書に書かれている文法の話はしません。冠詞をつける場合とつけない場合で意味ががらりと変わる場合を特に意識して感覚を身につけることが重要です。

例：

make the list

Gov. Tim Walz's state is known for its cold and snowy weather, more than 10,000 lakes and a tradition of "Minnesota nice." Low taxes and a booming economy don't typically make the list.

make the listは＜リスト、番付に載る＞という意味で、この<make>は<作る>という意味ではありません。make the headline（一面に載る）という表現がありますが、それと同じです。しかし、make a listというと＜リスト、一覧表を作る＞という意味になります。

class

classには階級とか等級とか授業とか同期卒業生(the class of 1979：1979年卒業生)などいろいろな意味がありますが、She has class.と無冠詞で使うと＜気品、上品さ＞という意味になります。＜私は犬が好きです＞と言いたいときに間違って<I like dog.>と無冠詞で言うと＜犬の肉が好き＞という意味になるので、要注意です。日本に長く住んでいる英語が母語の人に言うとわかってくれますが、日本語をまったく知らないネイティブの人に言うと、びっくりされます。
他にも多くの例がありますが、大雑把な性格の人でも英語を学ぶ際、こういう細かいことに注意を払わないといつまでたっても上達しません。

他の役に立つ表現

on the fly: informal
If you do something on the fly, you do it quickly, often while you are doing something else, without preparing and without thinking too much about how it should be done: (Cambridge Dictionary) (元々は飛球が地に落ちないうちに、という意味ですが、そこから＜大あわてで＞とか＜大急ぎで＞という意味になります。

Adding to the sense that Mr. Trump is flailing about, this week he has been testing out a new mocking nickname for his opponent, referring to Ms. Harris as “Kamabla.” It is a departure from the previous epithet he had chosen (“Laffin’ Kamala”), and nobody seems quite sure how to decipher it.

That is why Gretchen Whitmer, the Democratic governor of Michigan, immediately ruled herself out. That Pete Buttigieg is gay might also have counted against him — in addition to the fact that his cabinet status as transportation secretary would make it harder for Harris to distance herself from Biden. Oxford English Dictionary :To leave a place and move elsewhere; to end one's ties to a place in preparation for moving a significant distance.
これがおもしろいのは”up sticks”で一つの動詞であるということです。
「おもしろい」と思うことも、脳に浸透させる一つの方法です。

語彙をアクティブ語彙にするには、実際にどのように使われているか、をみることですが、辞書に出ている短い例文よりも、一つの記事の中でどのように使われているかを見た方が身につきます。できるだけ多くの英語を読むしかないのです。私の場合、以前書きましたが、英語の本以外には、FT(Financial Times), WSJ(Wall Street Journal), NYT(New York Times), Guardianは最低目を通しています。特にOpinion欄は非常に参考になります。毎月さまざまなテーマで数人から10人ほど英語を母語とするネイティブにインタビューしますが、読んで知った語彙をできるだけ使うようにしています。そうすることで脳に浸透するからです。つい最近はサメに襲われたアメリカ人にインタビューしました。
