#148「普通」って結構同じじゃない-文化間比較 (Normal is not consistent across cultures!)

海外に暮らすようになって、ちょっとだけ面白いって思うことがあります。「普通」ってなんだろう。僕の場合良く羽田空港でスタッフの方に英語で話しかけられます。完全に外国人だと思われてます。。。一方シンガポールにいて日本人以外に間違えられることはあまりないのです。「日本人顔」だと思われている。いや、顔だけじゃないかもしれないけれど。

結構良く聞かれることの一つに「Google mapのレストランのスコアが日本のレストランはなんでこんなに低いのか？」というのがあったりします。みんなの感覚だと良いお店には4.5とか5とかがつくのが当然。確かに日本でそんなスコアはあんまり見ないような。日本人はレストランに冷たいのかしら（そんなことない）。

手前味噌過ぎるデータではありますが、弊社INTAGE(2022)のデータが面白すぎたので紹介です。上記のグラフは、あなたにとっての「普通」って0点から10点でいうとどこですかという調査の結果を国別に比べたものです。いやいや、ぜんぜん違う。日本は約45%の人が５（真ん中）を選択。普通っていうのは多分、良くも悪くもない中間ということなのか？インドの方だと「普通」は26%ではありますが、なんと10が一番多い！！普通って最高っていう意味なのか。。。意見求む（笑）

ちなみにグラフには表示しませんでしたが、日本と韓国は分布がそっくり。なんか分かる気もする。かなり個人的な意見ですが、他の国の人と比べて考え方似てるなぁと思うときも多いし。アメリカ、イギリスもやはり似ていて7点くらいに頂点が。調査を専門にしていると、意識調査の結果を文化間で比べてはいけないと分かっていつつ、結構やってしまうところなので読むときには気をつけないとなぁ。

Living overseas, there is one question which often comes into my mind. What is "Normal"? I'm often spoken in Haneda airport staff in English. To them (Japanese), it seems I don't look standard Japanese Lol. In the mean time, being in Singapore, I'm seldom confused with other nationality. It seem I do have Japanese face for non Japanese people. Maybe not only about face but cloth?

Also there is one frequently asked question from people who love to travel to Japan. Why google map scores for restaurants are this low in Japan? True. In Singapore it is not unusual to see 4.5-5 in restaurant score. However it is very seldom in Japan. Are Japanese too dry to restaurants? (Maybe not)

Here let me introduce very interesting data from my own company (Smile). INTAGE(2022) shows that which score do you choose to answer it is "Normal" from 0 to 10 and compare across counties. It is SO Different!!! 45% of people in Japan chose 5 (middle) as "Normal". Normal to Japanese is maybe "not good" and "not bad"? while for Indian, the highest score (26%) in score 10! Normal means the best to them?? Opinion are welcomed! 

I didn't pick up Korean data in the bar chart above but distributions for Korean and Japan are so similar (Almost identical). Umm, I can somehow understand. I sometimes feel that our way of consideration is closer compared with other nationalities. UK and US are also similar and the highest is score 7. Umm, there is the basic theory in research industry that we should not compare scores of perceptional questions across cultures and this is the reason. Well we often do though… I really have to be careful when I pick up insight from comparison data…
