この曲は、ノースランドのテ・アウポウリ族に属するEru Timoko Ihakaさん(1876-1937) が作った曲です。彼の故郷テ・カオはそれは美しい場所で、私は一度訪ねたことがあり、この曲の解説を読んで「あの土地から！」と思って、習いたくなったのです。
　
イハカさんは、敬虔なクリスチャンであり、また牧畜をして生計を立てていたそうです。
　
この歌の中には、「マオリ語の歌＜２＞　E Toru Ngā Mea」に出てくるWhakapono, Tumanako, Te Aroha（Hope, Faith, Love）が出てきます。歌全体は、祖先から引き継がれたものについて歌っているので、キリスト教と、祖先から伝えられたものの中で、重なるのがこの３つだったのかな、と思います。

Ehara i te mea.... というのは、"it is not a thing of ..." という意味の慣用句だそうです。そのまま覚える、には、歌はいいですね(^^)
