変わる尾道に、懐かしの風景は残る Nostalgic scenery remains in the reborn Onomichi

今回の尾道訪問では、福山で新幹線から山陽本線に乗り換え尾道駅で下車した。南側の改札を出ると、数年前に訪れてときの駅舎の姿が変わり一新されていた。聞くと、一昨年にリニューアルされ、明治時代中期に駅舎が創設されて以来という。尾道の表玄関として新しい尾道を感じさせる駅舎に生まれ変わっていた。

In this visit to Onomichi, I changed from the Shinkansen to the Sanyo Main Line at Fukuyama and got off at Onomichi Station. When I got out of the ticket gate on the south side, the appearance of the station building when I visited there a few years ago was changed and renewed. I heard that it was renewed two years ago and since the station building was built in the middle of the Meiji era. It was reborn as a station building that makes you feel a new Onomichi as the front entrance of Onomichi.

改札を出て左には尾道の名産や特産物がならぶ「おみやげ街道」というショップがあった。外部から来た者には、帰りに立ち寄るお土産購入にはうってつけ。正面には瀬戸内海が広がり目の前に向島が臨める。尾道ならではの風景である。駅舎と同様に駅前ローター周辺が変貌していた。
そして、駅前ロータリーの目立つ場所にしかも玉垣や柵等が一切なく開放的な神社があった。駅前に神社があるのは全国的にも珍しいのではないだろうか。お社の存在は知っていたが、駅前周辺の再開発により建替えられ新しくなっていた。
神社の扁額に「蘇和(そわ)稲荷神社」と書かれてあった。石柱には「霊威赫奕震四海」「盛徳廣大利萬民」と難しい言葉と市制施行 100 周年と刻まれていた。

On the left side of the ticket gate, there was a shop called "Souvenir Kaido" where you can find Onomichi's specialties and special products. For those who come from outside, it is perfect for buying souvenirs to stop by on your way home. The Seto Inland Sea spreads out in front of you, and Mukaishima can be seen in front of you. It is a landscape unique to Onomichi. Like the station building, the area around the rotor in front of the station was changing.
And there was an open shrine in a prominent place of the rotary in front of the station, with no Tamagaki or fences. It is rare in Japan that there is a shrine in front of the station. I knew the existence of the company, but it was rebuilt and renewed due to the redevelopment around the station.
"Sowa Inari Shrine" was written on the flat surface of the shrine. The stone pillars were engraved with difficult words and the 100th anniversary of the enforcement of the city system.

尾道は、1998年の市制施工100周年を機に、町が大きく変貌を遂げた。変わりゆく尾道を最も象徴したのが駅前再開発事業で、駅前ロータリー及び港湾緑地帯の整備、桟橋とホテル、商業施設を複合した ウォーターフロントビルなどの建設で新たな尾道駅前の景観が形成されていった。
振り返ると、戦後の広域道路網整備により尾道大橋、因島大橋、そして1999年に新尾道大橋が完成ししまなみ海道として四国へとつながった。そして、2005年に向島が尾道市に編入され、2018年 4 月 1 日、尾道市は市制施行 120 周年を機に第二弾の尾道変貌の歴史に刻まれるストーリーが誕生した。

Looking back, the Onomichi Bridge, Innoshima Bridge, and Shinonomichi Bridge were completed in 1999 due to the development of the wide-area road network after the war, leading to Shikoku as the Shimanami Kaido. Then, Mukaishima was incorporated into Onomichi City in 2005, and on April 1, 2018, Onomichi City was born on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the enforcement of the city system, and a story engraved in the history of the second Onomichi transformation was born.

筆者の個人的な尾道ストーリーは、駅前にある目の前の向島へ渡る「向島行渡船のりば」が始まりで尾道郷愁の原点になっている。生まれは隣の三原市だか、高校がこの尾道向島(当時は御調郡向島町)にあった県立尾道工業高等学校(2007年に統合され廃校、後に現在の尾道高校がこの地に移転)に、この懐かしの渡り船で毎日の通学していた。片道7、8分で、半世紀前のことなので記憶は定かではないが船賃が10円(現在100円／一人片道)だったように記憶している。駅前の渡船は人と自転車のみの乗船で、船の形はむかしのまま。その船姿だからこそ、懐かしい思いが高ぶる。

The author's personal story of Onomichi begins with the "Mukaishima Line Tosen Stop" that crosses Mukaishima in front of the station, and is the origin of Onomichi nostalgia. Born in Mihara City next town, the high school was located in Mukaishima, Onomichi (then Mukaishima-cho, Mitsuki-gun). I used to go to school every day on this nostalgic crossing ship. The ship takes 7 or 8 minutes one way, and since it was half a century ago, I don't remember, but I remember that the fare was 10 yen (currently 100 yen / one way per person). The ferry in front of the station is for people and bicycles only, and the shape of the ship remains old. Because of the appearance of the ship, I feel nostalgic.

新しい町に変貌する尾道に、むかしの姿が残されている。地域が一変する都市開発計画ではなく、地形やその地の歴史に準じた変革が随時進行している。世代が変わり尾道をより暮らしやすい町に、そして誇りにできるわが町にしたいと願う次の世代の人たちの活動が広がっている。これからの10年、また国内外から注目される尾道に変わっていくことを期待している。

Onomichi, which transforms into a new town, has a long-standing appearance. It is not an urban development plan that changes the region completely, but changes are underway at any time according to the topography and the history of the region. The activities of the next generation who want to make Onomichi a better place to live and a proud town are expanding. I hope that it will change to Onomichi, which is drawing attention from home and abroad, in the next 10 years.
