比叡山延暦寺の名跡がいまの世にも The name of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mt. Hiei is still in the world today

千年の歴史の中で、比叡山は数々の焼き討ちに遭っている。
ご承知のとおり、室町幕府の6代将軍足利義教や明応の政変で細川政元、そして460年前、織田信長による比叡山焼き討ちなどがあげられる。
1642年に徳川家光によって再建され、約400年の間補修を重ね現在にその名跡を残している。

In the millennial history, Mt. Hiei has been hit by numerous burns.
As you know, the 6th Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori of the Muromachi Shogunate, Masamoto Hosokawa due to the political change of Meio, and 460 years ago, Nobunaga Oda slaughtered Mt. Hiei.

It was rebuilt by Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1642, and has been repaired for about 400 years, leaving its name today.
 
私の中では、この比叡山延暦寺と高野山金剛峰寺は日本の寺院の二大巨頭だと思っている。延暦寺が天台宗で、金剛峰寺が真言宗の大本山である。社会の教科書にもよく登場した「最澄」と「空海」という僧侶が開建した寺院として有名である。

I think that Enryaku-ji Temple on Mt. Hiei and Kongobu-ji Temple on Mt. Koya are the two largest magnates in Japan. Enryaku-ji is the Tendai sect, and Kongobu-ji is the head temple of the Shingon sect. It is famous as a temple built by the monks "Saicho" and "Kukai" who often appeared in social studies textbooks.

ちなみに「延暦寺」は単独のお堂の名称ではなく、比叡山の山上から東麓にかけて位置する東塔（とうどう）、西塔（さいとう）、横川（よかわ）などの区域に所在する150ほどの堂塔の総称である。比叡山の寺社は、最盛期には三千を越える寺社で構成されていたと案内に記されていた。
その中核堂が、根本中堂にあたる。その根本中堂は令和の大改修中である。

比叡山延暦寺では数々の名僧が修行していたことで、日本の仏教の礎だったことがわかる。

By the way, "Enryaku-ji" is not the name of a single temple, but about 150 temples located in areas such as the east tower, the west tower, and the yokawa, which are located from the top of Mt. Hiei to the eastern foot of the mountain. It is a general term. It was stated in the guide that the temples and shrines of Mt. Hiei were composed of more than 3,000 temples and shrines at their peak. The core hall is the Nemoto Nakado. The Nemoto Nakado is undergoing a major renovation of Reiwa. Many famous monks practiced at Enryaku-ji Temple on Mt. Hiei, which shows that it was the foundation of Japanese Buddhism.

よく知られている僧としては、浄土宗の開祖法然上人、浄土真宗の開祖親鸞上人、日蓮宗の開祖日蓮上人、臨済宗の開祖栄西禅師、曹洞宗の開祖道元禅師など、日本仏教史上著名な僧の多くが若い日に比叡山で修行している。そしてそれぞれの宗派を興し、それぞれの本山を開建した。

Well-known monks include Honen, the founder of the Jodo sect, Shinshu, the founder of the Jodo sect, Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect, Eisai, the founder of the Rinzai sect, and Eisai, the founder of the Soto sect. Many of the monks practice on Mt. Hiei when they are young. Then, each sect was established and each main mountain was opened.
 
その比叡山に昨秋訪れた。雨上がりの、秋色に染まった葉がキラキラと光っていたのが印象的に残っている。

I visited Mt. Hiei last fall. It is impressive that the leaves dyed in autumn color were shining after the rain.
