連続小説 MIA⑼ | Memories in Australia

　竜崎とは、翌日の夕食を一緒過ごす約束をし、その晩は別れた。彼は、ゴールドコーストに関する情報（人気のある飲食店や、郵便局の場所。それから不動産情報）についてよく知っていたし、なによりも市内での働き口を紹介する気がありそうだった。仕事の内容は「簡単」らしい。請け負っている品物を、徒歩やバスで配達することらしかった。（詳しい内容は明日の夕食の時に）ロビーを過ぎ、エレベーターに乗る。フロントに宿泊延長を申し出ておけばよかったかな。と思うものの後回しにする。カギを回し、部屋に入る。同居人のミゲルとテオが部屋にいた。なんだか久しぶりだなと思う。僕は浮かれているのに、この兄弟ときたらなんだか鬱屈としている。「よう。調子はどうだい？」と茶化してみる。空振りだった。まったくいい返事がない。僕は、自分のベッドに入り、本を開いた。今日は竜崎と話していて、結局のところ、ほとんど読んでいないことを思い出した。文章を読もうとするが、文字情報としてしか入ってこない。きっと今日の出来事に興奮し、なかなか本に入り込めないのだろう。ようやくペースを掴み、文脈に追いついた時だった。ミゲルが、躊躇(ためら)いがちに「おい。ちょっといいか？」と声をかけてくる。僕は少々苛立ち、ぶっきらぼうに「なんだ？」と言う。
「晶馬、お前今日、バーで竜崎と居たか？知り合いが見たって言っててな」
「ああ。居たよ。声をかけてもらったんだ。いい人だよね。たくさんのビールをご馳走になったよ」
「昨日、初めて会ったのか」テオが口を挟む。
「昨日？いや、今日初めて会ったんだよ。君たちは知り合いなのか？」
ミゲルは、下を向いていて表情はわからない。うつむいたままこう言った。
「俺たちは、竜崎に借りがあるんだよ」
テオは、何かを思い出して、怯えたような目をしていた。

I promised Ryuzaki that we would have dinner together the next day, and we parted ways that night. He gave me some information about the Gold Coast (popular restaurants, location of the post office, etc.). and above all, he seemed to be willing to introduce me to some jobs in the city. The job was "easy," he said. deliver the goods he was contracted to deliver on foot or by bus. (He wi'l give you more details tomorrow at dinner.) I walked past the lobby and took the elevator. I should have asked the front desk to extend my stay. But I decided to put it off until later. I turn the key and enter the room. Miguel and Theo, my roommates, were in the room. It had been a while since I had seen them. I was in a happy mood, but these two brothers were somewhat depressed. "Hey, guys. How are you doing? I tried to make fun of them. I struck out. There was no good answer at all. I went to my bed and opened a book. Talking with Ryuzaki today, I remembered that, after all, I had hardly read at all. I tried to read the text, but it only came to me as textual information. I must have been so excited about today's events that I could hardly get into the book. It was when I finally picked up the pace and caught up with the context. Miguel hesitantly said, "Hey. Can I talk to you for a minute?" I was a little irritated and bluntly asked, "What is it?" He said, "Shoma, were you with Ryuzaki at the bar today? Someone I know said he saw you."
"Year. I was there. I was approached by Ryuzaki. He's a nice guy. He treated me to a lot of beer."
Theo interrupted, "You met for the first time yesterday?"
'Yesterday? No, I met him for the first time today. Do you guys know each other?"
Miguel was looking down and I couldn't make out his expression. With a downcast look on his face, he said, "We owe Ryuzaki a debt."
Theo had a frightened look in his eyes, remembering something.
