ミゲルは、竜崎と出会った時のことを話し始めた。ひと月前にゲストハウスのバーで声をかけられたという。（僕と同じだ）ミゲルとテオは、ゴールドコーストのカジノで大負けをした。損失額は数千ドル。自棄になって酒を飲んでいた時に、竜崎に出会う。彼に「簡単な仕事」を紹介すると言われて請け負ったのが「ハーブの配達人」だった。仕事はじめの時に、二人は竜崎からUSBフラッシュメモリの配達だと言われたという。実際に、封筒の中には、USBフラッシュメモリが入っていた。彼らは、竜崎にいわれるがまま、一日20件ほどの配達を行った。一日当たりの報酬は、200ドル以上の日もあった。あるとき、封筒からUSBフラッシュメモリが転げ落ちた。それを拾うと、カバーが取れていて、中にはハーブが入っていた。二人は、竜崎に詰問したという。「いったいどうして、俺たちにこんなものを運ばせたんだ！」ミゲルは激昂していた。それに対して竜崎は薄ら笑いを浮かべて、こう言った。「金が欲しかったんだろう？気にせずに続ければいい」彼の笑顔は冷徹な印象だった。その一件以来、二人は「運び屋」をやめた。しかし、ミゲルは竜崎から3000ドルを超える現金を借りていた。それは、カジノの負けで作ってしまった借金の返済に充てるものだという。竜崎は、新たな運び屋を必要としていた。そして、晶馬と出会うのだった。

一部始終を聞かされた僕は、背中に汗をかいていた。甘い話には、裏があるのだ。このブラジル人兄弟の二人はいい奴らだった。竜崎とは、まだ詳細について話をしていない。明日の晩に約束をしている食事の席で話せば良い。「テオ、さっき、竜崎にあったのは今日が初めてじゃないだろう？と訊いたよな。あれはどういう意味だ」テオは、口元を手で触ってから、「昨日の晩、俺は二人の日本人に殴られた。ちょうど、夜にゲストハウスに戻ってきた時だった。フロントの入口が閉まっていただろう？それで俺は駐車場の方へ回ったんだよ。勝手口があることを知っていたからな。そうしたら暗闇の中で背後から襲われた。意識を失いそうになっている時、聞こえてきたのが、複数人で会話している声。それが日本語だったんだ。」

Miguel began to talk about the time he met Ryuzaki. He said that he had been approached at the bar of the guesthouse a month earlier. (Just like me.) Miguel and Theo had lost a lot of money at a casino on the Gold Coast. They lost thousands of dollars. While they were drinking out of desperation, they met Ryuzaki. He told them that he would introduce them to a "simple job" and they took it as "herb deliverer. At the beginning of the job, they were told by Ryuzaki that it was a delivery of USB flash drives. In fact, inside the envelope was a USB flash drive. They did as they were told by Ryuzaki and made about 20 deliveries a day. On some days, they were paid more than $200 per day. One day, a USB flash drive fell out of the envelope. When they picked it up, the cover had been removed and inside was a herb. The two men reportedly choked up at Ryuzaki. Why in the world did you make us carry this stuff!" Miguel was incensed. In response, Ryuzaki smiled wanly and said, "I'm sorry. 'You wanted money, didn't you? Don't worry about it, just keep going." His smile was cool-headed. After that, they quit the "courier" business. However, Miguel owed Ryuzaki over $3,000 in cash. He said it was to pay off a debt he had made from a casino loss. Ryuzaki needed a new courier. And then he meets Shoma.

I was sweating on my back when I heard the whole story. There is always a flip side to every sweet story. These two Brazilian brothers were good guys. I had not yet discussed the details with Ryuzaki. We can talk about it tomorrow night at the dinner we have agreed to have. Theo, earlier today wasn't the first time you met Ryuzaki, was it? You asked me, "What do you want to do? What did you mean by that?" Theo touched his mouth with his hand and then said, "Last night, I was beaten up by two Japanese guys. It was just as I was coming back to the guesthouse for the night. The front entrance was closed, right? So I went around to the parking lot. I knew there was a kitchen door. Then I was attacked from behind in the dark. As I was about to lose consciousness, I heard the voices of several people talking to each other. It was in Japanese."
