0853おはようございます。今日は慶應義塾大学の法学部の過去問題にトライしてみたいと思います。では、さっそく参りましょう。この問題は、受験生がまず知らないであろう単語の意味を英英辞書の定義に紐づける問題です。文章の前後関係で、意味を推測する必要があります。正直に言って、英検1級で見かけるような単語も多くあり、一般的な受験生のレベルをはるかに超えています。下線部がない部分の単語も難しいですから、全体的に意味を取るのが非常に難しいと言えるでしょう。
II. Read the text and answer the questions that follow.

Now once more above the roar of traffic that same note swelled on the $${\underline{\text{grimy}}}$$(19) air, contriving a transformation scene to recast those $${\underline{\text{purlieus}}}$$(20) into the vision of an oriental dreamland, artificial, if you like, but still quite alluring under the shifting clouds of a cheerless sky.
If you looked up the basic forms of the underlined words (11) - (20) in a dictionary, you would find the following definitions ( 0 - 9 ). In each case, decide which definition matches the underlined word and mark that number on your answer sheet.

では、ここから模範解答を示し、解説を行います。正直な感想を言いますと、「いやあ、めちゃくちゃ難しかった。」もう、これは高校生で学習するレベルをはるかに超えていますし、英検1級レベルの単語がバンバン出てきます。慶應義塾大学法学部というのは、この水準の英語力を求めてきているということですね。いやあ、すごいレベルです、本当に。

【解説】爆撃を受けて廃墟になった場所というところと、廃墟のドアに縁取られたという文脈から「景色」を推測することができるため、6「景色」を選ぶことができます。文脈から判断しなくてはなりません。やや難しいと思います。

【解説】これは選択肢に動詞が一つしかないことで、確定できます。had+過去分詞は、動詞しか来ません。したがって、1「削除する、切除する」を選びます。これは簡単です。

【解説】両側の壁から、4「まぐさ」を推測できます。これは個人的にかなり難しいと思います。

その先、双子の柱と横木の向こう側には、約束された隠れ家は何も残っておらず、threshold(14)はrubble(15)の淵へと急降下していた。
【解説】thresholdはニューヨークタイムズなどではしょっちゅう出てきます。8の「入り口、玄関」の意味です。覚えておいていいでしょう。rubbleは9の「がれき」です。これも覚えておいたほうがいい単語です。

【解説】of magiciansを読めば、0「隠れ家」であることが推測できます。

【解説】直後にvoiceが来ているので、修飾語である7「目にも耳にも心地よい」が来ます。

高速道路を旅するあのプリマドンナの声を聞いたのは、数年前、モーランドが結婚の話をした日以来だった。
【解説】itineraryはよくTOEICでも出てくる「旅程、旅行プラン、訪問地のリスト」です。それからhighwaysから移動する、形容詞「旅をする」を推測できます。したがって3「移動する、世界を飛び回る、巡回する」となります。

【解説】ここの推測は簡単です。交通の轟音にまじって、同じ音が～な空気に響いたとあるので、そこから連想される2「薄汚れた」が選べるはずです。

【解説】lieuはplaceと同じ意味です。in lieu of～はin place of～と同じ意味で「～の代わりに」です。lieuが場所だと知っていれば、導けるのと、oriental dreamlandが「東洋の夢の国」なので、5「近郊、周辺地域」を推測することができます。
