「Social Movements and Social Change : The Role of Protest and Social Moments in Modern Japanese History and Society」
Course Description
日本社会における政治的、社会的、文化的な変化の実現に向けた社会運動の役割を調査しています。歴史的な抗議活動を研究する際には現代の動きを意識し、今日の社会運動を考察する際には深い歴史的ルーツへの理解をもたらす。このコースでは、「誰が "日本人 "と定義されるのか？
なぜ日本社会はしばしば「低紛争」と表現されるのか？
社会運動や抗議行動は、文化的・政治的・社会的変化の担い手として、どのように機能しているのか？社会運動においてメディアはどのような役割を担っているのか？社会運動はどのように世界とつながっているのか？（授業内容from syllabus)
Discussing topics : political and social movements that address issues like racism, colonialism, sexism, discrimination based on sexuality, classism, etc.
Course Objectives ：
By the end of the course, students will be able to :
1) Have a sense of the role of social movements in Japan's modern history and connect them with contemporary society and politics
2) Gain exposure to different primary and secondary texts in Japanese history (in english translation)
3) Learn research and writing skills
4) Hone media literacy skills
Assignments and Evaluations :
Class Participation (including in-class presentation) : 30 %
Weekly Reading Responses (Posted on Blackboard) : 30 %
Final Research Papers : 40%
Policies and Expectations
1. Plagiarism
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. We will discuss in depth during the class, but for quick reference, plagiarism includes:
1) Submitting work that is entirely or in part copied from another source :
2) Using quotations from a source without proper citation (proper citation practices will be covered in class)
3) Paraphrasing or translating from a source without proper citation.
Submission of the assignments
1) the standard submitting academic assignments is a typed document, double-spaced, using 2.5 margins all around, with 12-point font size, and Times New Roman font. Remember to carefully spellcheck all submitted assignments.
2) Assignments must be submitted in the manner specified by the instructor.
3) All assignments will require a passing grade in order to receive a passing grade for the course. Failure to submit required assignments will result in a failing grade.
Attendance and Absenses:
If you are having trouble keeping up with the course please consult with the professor as soon as you can.

Important notifications to the class will be sent out over email to your Rikkyo email address and updated on the course software as well. Please make sure to check regularly.
Schedule of assignments
there are 12 content units.
for these weeks, there will be a discussion board on blackboard with a prompt for me to reply to before class meets. the prompts will take various forms- sometimes i will ask you for your response to an academic reading, sometimes I will ask you think upon your own experience or perceptions, sometimes I may ask you to search mass media and share your findings. These discussion board prompts will ensure we have a vibrant discussion each class period, and will constitute 30 percent of your final grade, so your weekly participation in them is vital to your passing grade for the class. You will need to submit at least 10 out of 12 discussion board posts in order to receive full marks.
There will be a short-midterm paper and presentation (topic TBA) worth 15 percent of your grade. Your final paper topics will be decided in consultation with me- I want you to research something that
左翼 (Left Wing) - 改革波、革命派。
「自由」「平等」「人権」があるという理性、知性を（知らない人に広め（啓蒙）、世に実現を目指し主張する人。
現実に支配や抑圧、上下の身分、差別といった、「自由」と「平等」に反する制度があったら、それを批判し改革するのが「左、左翼」と自任する人の使命となります。ゆえに多くの場合、「改革派」「革命派」
政治や経済の仕組みは人間の手で作りかえることができる」という考え方
右翼(Right Wing)
- 対するに「右」「右翼」は、「伝統」や「人間の感情、情緒」を重視します。「知性」や「理性」がさかしらにも生み出した「自由」「平等」「人権」では人は割り切れないと考えます（「反合理主義」「反知性主義」「反啓蒙主義」）。
ゆえに、たとえそれらに何ら合理性が認められないとしても、「長い間定着してきた世の中の仕組み（「秩序」）である以上は、多少の弊害があっても簡単に変えられないし、変えるべきでもない」と結論します。
